Cheers!: The Danube Swabian Association will host a Bavarian and Local Beer Tasting on Sept. 13 featuring music, food and local beer. KEVIN COOK / FOR THE TIMES
There is this persistent rumor that’s been going around for years that people like to drink beer. Those intrigued by this notion might like to make it over to the Danube Swabian Association, 1277 Southampton Road, on Saturday, Sept. 13, to sample some imported and local suds.
The association’s Bavarian and Local Beer Tasting begins at 4 p.m. and lasts until 8, according to the club’s Fred Gauss. It’s a celebration of Bavarian beer purity laws and it’s an early Oktoberfest, too.
Admission to this outdoor event is $30 at the door. Bad weather will move it indoors.
Gauss said the association hosted a similar event in April that 90 people attended. The club is hoping for a bigger crowd Saturday.
Bavaria adopted a “purity law” in 1516 that mandated that the only ingredients used in brewing beer must be barley, hops and water. Elbow-benders interested in comparing the tastes of imported and local beers will have a lot of choices. There will be plenty of imports, Gauss said, and two German brews will be on tap. “Every half-hour, we’ll offer another German beer,” Gauss added. Local beers — Neshaminy Creek Brewing, Naked Brewery, Conshohocken and Round Guys — will be presented, too, he said.
Beer will be served in 4-ounce cups.
There will be music and, for those who like a little competition, a beer contest. It won’t be a drinking contest, Gauss said, but a beer glass “holding” competition that might prove difficult.
The object is to hold a liter of beer straight out with a stiff arm. Contestants, although they might want to, are not allowed to bend their elbows.
