Recent robberies a hot topic at Lawncrest Civic meeting

Members of the Lawncrest Community Association recently heard from 2nd Police District officials and a representative of Experience Corps, an affiliate of AARP. The meeting took place on Aug. 19 at the Philadelphia Protestant Home.

The police and Lawncrest Town Watch volunteers mentioned a series of recent robberies of individuals who’ve withdrawn money from banks. The robberies have taken place on the 7200 block of Rutland St., the 6700 block of Rising Sun Ave., the 7300 block of Bustleton Ave. and the 2200 block of Cottman Ave.

Police have identified the suspect as Ronald Singleton, a heavy-set, 52-year-old black man who is about 6 feet tall and drives a Chevrolet Malibu. He lives on the 5100 block of Hawthorne St. in Frankford.

Meanwhile, the 2nd Police District will join state Sen. Tina Tartaglione and the 2nd Police District Advisory Council in sponsoring the 10th annual Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Target, at 7400 Bustleton Ave. A Bike Ride for Peace will start at 9 a.m. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include a disc jockey, refreshments, child fingerprinting, vehicle identification number etching, document shredding, bicycle registration and face-painting. Individuals can also turn in ammunition for disposal. There will be displays and information tables by the police and fire departments, elected officials and city and state officials.

Loraine Carter, volunteer engagement specialist for Experience Corps, invited anyone 50 or older to become a literacy tutor at a public or charter school in Philadelphia. Volunteers receive training and a stipend. They work October through May with kids in kindergarten through third grade in about two-dozen schools, including J. Hampton Moore and Solis-Cohen elementary schools. Call 267–592–4459, visit www.aarp.org/ecphiladelphia or email Carter at [email protected]

The Lawncrest Recreation Center, at 6000 Rising Sun Ave., will hold a community yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’ll take place rain or shine, with the sale moving inside if it rains. Spots cost $10. Call John Cooney or Vinnie Ward at the center at 215–685–0597, or email Beth at [email protected]

Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. at St. William parish hall, at Argyle and Robbins streets. Melanie Huynh, a student at St. Cecilia Elementary School, will lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and The Star-Spangled Banner. The guest speakers will be Carlton Williams, commissioner of the city Department of Licenses and Inspections, and Dianne Murphy, community relations officer in the 2nd Police District. ••
