Eleven volunteers braved a rainstorm for the second month in a row to clean up a section of Pennypack Park along Holme Avenue near Nazareth Hospital on Aug. 23.
The hardy souls removed 16 bags of trash, one bag of aluminum cans and other assorted debris from the ballfield behind the hospital, both sides of Holme Avenue, the park entrance on Axe Factory Road, the dirt path from the ballfield to the rear of the former Northeast Community Center and the traffic islands on Holme Avenue.
Volunteers included Joyce Ferraro, George Scholl, Sergio Ramirez, Rich Glaser, Robert McMunn, Katya and Eileen Rebensky, Kathy Volack, Louise and Bruce Kopena and Nance Kerns. The group also got help from Jim Huntsberger and T.J. Lozado from the Department of Parks and Recreation as well as Officer Loizos of the 8th Police District.
Among the trash items, volunteers collected a milk crate, a folding table, a five-gallon water container, a Styrofoam cooler, a couple of screws, piping anchors, tin snips, boxer shorts, two golf balls, a deflated balloon, headphones, a side-view car mirror, a pile of assorted bricks, four 16-foot by 12-foot boards and two wrapped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
In September, the Friends of Pennypack Park will team with the Delaware River City Corporation to clean up the Pennypack on the Delaware park at 7979 State Road. The entrance is just south of Rhawn Street and is also the entrance for the Riverview Nursing Home. All volunteers are invited to participate. They should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. The FOPP will bring all supplies and refreshments. In case of bad weather, call 215–934-PARK or email to [email protected] for cancellation information. ••
