In loving memory: St. Veronica Elementary School recently blessed and dedicated its new Officer Daniel Boyle Library Media Center. Danny Boyle, who was 21 at the time, was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 6, 1991.
The legacy of a slain Philadelphia police officer grew on Sept. 9 as the St. Veronica Elementary School blessed and dedicated its new Officer Daniel Boyle Library Media Center in a gathering of school children, staff and families, along with the Boyle family and friends.
Somerton native and Archbishop Ryan graduate Danny Boyle was just 21 when he was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 6, 1991. His father Pat, who is a retired police officer, along with family and friends turned the horrible tragedy into an enduring tribute by creating the Officer Daniel Boyle Scholarship Fund, which has raised more than $1 million in Danny’s memory to enable thousands of children to attend Catholic schools in Philadelphia.
Officer Boyle’s father, Pat, and uncle, Michael, are founding members of the St. Veronica School board where both attended grade school. The school is at Sixth and Tioga streets in Hunting Park. The Boyle Fund has given more than $50,000 to students of the school in recent years, helping to change the lives of children in an economically challenged community. In addition, under Pat and Michael’s leadership, volunteers gathered to refurbish the library with new paint, carpet and furniture.
Father Rene Barczak, OFM, delivered the blessing of the new library media center on Sept. 9 before visitors toured the facility.
