Take Back Your Neighborhood discusses school reform

Members of the Take Back Your Neighborhood civic association last week heard from a local attorney and the head of Pennsylvania Working Families.

Kati Sipp, director of the liberal Pennsylvania Working Families, spoke about her group’s effort to abolish the School Reform Commission. The group helped collect 40,000 petitions to lobby City Council to place a nonbinding resolution on the Nov. 4 ballot, calling for an end to the SRC.

But, Council failed to vote on the proposal at its Sept. 11 meeting, meaning it could not make it on the ballot in time for this fall. Council approved the measure at its Sept. 18 meeting, meaning the question will go to voters in the May 2015 primary.

Meanwhile, attorney Larry Levin spoke of his firm’s work in the areas of workers’ compensation, Social Security disability and veterans’ benefits. He is a partner in the Jenkintown firm of Shor & Levin. He and Jay Shor are known as the “Bulldog Lawyers.”

In other news from the Sept. 15 meeting:
