Animal rescue holding fundraiser

Northeast Animal Rescue will hold its second annual Pastabilities for Pets fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m. at Franklin’s Pub, 3521 Bowman St. in East Falls.

Tickets cost $30 apiece, or two for $50 and includes dinner. There will be a cash bar, raffle and silent auction.

Murder mystery at Loudenslager

The interactive murder mystery Law and Murder will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Corp. John Loudenslager American Legion Post №366, at 7976–78 Oxford Ave. in Fox Chase.

The cost is $29. Doors open at 3 p.m. for a cash bar. Dinner will be served at 4 p.m. Show time is 5 p.m.

Flea market is Saturday

McIlwain Playground, 5200 Penn St. in Frankford, will hold a flea market on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bazaar at Crescentville church

Crescentville United Methodist Church, 412 Sentner St., will hold a flea market and bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Grant application deadline

The deadline is Oct. 15 to apply for a grant from the Joseph C. McCloskey Charitable Fund. A $1,000 grant will be given to a Tacony-based youth association or organization.

Tacony historical society to meet

The Historical Society of Tacony will meet on Monday, Oct. 20, at 7 pm. at Tacony Library, Torresdale Avenue and Knorr Street.

The topic will be A Walk Through Disston Saw Works Over A Century Ago.

Guest speaker Ring Lardner will discuss more than three-dozen high-quality images from a soft leather-bound “lobby book” once on display for visitors and clients to view at Henry Disston & Sons Saw Works.

Also, Louis A. Iatarola will provide an update about ongoing activities and the work to nominate the Disston area of Tacony as a national historic district.

Light refreshments will be served. ••

O’Neill distributing recycling bins

City Councilman Brian O’Neill (R-10th dist.) will sponsor a recycling bin giveaway at his district office at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road, on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 9 to 11 a.m.

The bins will be registered for a recycle rewards program.

Civic association seeks help with coat drive

The Holme Circle Civic Association and Nationwide Insurance ask the community to help a coat drive in support of homeless veterans and their families. The collection began on Oct. 1 and will continue through Nov. 30.

Coats may be dropped off at Nationwide Insurance, 2865 Holme Ave., in the Holme Circle Shopping Center. Contact the agency at 215–676–6700 or www.nationwide.com/bornagency.

Donations should be new or gently used coats. They will be given to homeless veterans and their families through the U.S. Veterans Multi-Service Center, 213 N. Fourth St. ••

Pets can get in some seasonal fun

Halloween isn’t just for humans. Our faithful, furry friends deserve some fun, too. Glen Foerd on the Delaware will welcome dogs, dog owners and all dog lovers to the inaugural Howl-o-ween Hound Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Philadelphia Police K-9 Unit.

The party will kick off with a salute to Little Ugly, Glen Foerd’s most famous dog. A wreath will be laid at his grave site on the grounds of the riverfront estate at 5001 Grant Ave. After that, there will be a dog trickery contest and a red carpet costume parade with prizes awarded in various categories including best dog/owner duo.

The K-9 Unit will showcase its heroic dogs. There will also be a nail clipping spa, souvenir photo booth, artisan doggy treats and behavior therapy sessions (i.e. training tips). Humans can enjoy lawn games and art activities from Blue Sky Art Studio.

The Dapper Dog Food Truck and the Dining Car will sell meals and sweets. Vendor spots are still available by calling 215–632–5330.

Admission costs $10 per person (children under 3 are free), as well as $1 per dog. Additional donations will be accepted. For more details, visit www.glenfoerd.org. ••

Halloween event to benefit Explorer Cadets

Families are invited to celebrate Halloween with a costume beef and beer fundraiser to benefit the Philadelphia Police Explorer Cadet Program on Friday, Oct. 24, from 8 p.m. to midnight at Cannstatter Volksfest Verein, 9130 Academy Road.

All guests are encouraged to show up in costume. There will be D.J. entertainment, gift basket raffles and prizes for the best costumes. ••

SPCA hosts animal adoption event

The Pennsylvania SPCA, Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia, Morris Animal Refuge, Operation Ava, Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society and Women’s Humane Society will receive grant funding to participate in the 2014 ASPCA ‘Mega Match-a-thon.’

The event will take place from Oct. 17–19 at the PSPCA’s 350 E. Erie Ave. headquarters. Times are: Oct. 17, from 1 to 8 p.m.; Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“The PSPCA is thrilled to host our friends at other animal welfare organizations in Philadelphia to help the many wonderful cats and dogs in our shelters find loving homes,” said PSPCA CEO Jerry Buckley. “Working together with ACCT Philly, Morris, Operation Ava, PAWS and Women’s Humane, we are aiming to save the lives of 400 animals and enrich the lives of new adopting families. We thank the ASPCA and Subaru for making this important event possible.” ••

Apply to enroll at Swenson

The process to apply for enrollment at Swenson Arts and Technology High School, 2750 Red Lion Road, begins on Oct. 17.

The School District of Philadelphia’s High School application process will be online only. The application for 2015–2016 will be available on the school district website from Oct. 17 to Dec. 12.

District students will be able to access the application through the Parent/Student online portal by entering their student ID and password. Non-district students will be able to access the application through a link on the main page of the school district’s website.

Swenson offers 11 career and technical education programs of study designed to give students the technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in specific occupations.

Career program majors include Allied Health, Baking and Culinary, Computer and Networking Technology, Construction Technology, Digital Media Arts, Engineering Related Technology, and Transportation Technology.

The programs are comprised of academic and technical courses that develop the skills necessary to succeed in college or the high-priority fields of today’s job market. Successful completion of a program includes 1,080 hours of career and technical instruction in the chosen field; an end-of-program assessment; and attainment of industry-recognized certifications.

Swenson representatives will be at the High School Expo on Friday, Oct. 17 (3–7 p.m.), and Saturday, Oct. 18 (9 a.m.-3 p.m.), at the Armory at Drexel University, 33rd and Market streets.
