Friends of Poquessing organize clean up event

A dozen volunteers gathered at Knights Road and Clarendon Avenue in Morrell Park on Nov. 15 to participate in the LOVE Your Park Fall Service Day sponsored by the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the Department of Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with the Friends of Poquessing Watershed.

In addition to removing more than 17 bags of trash from the park, volunteers planted three trees along Knights Road. The volunteers included Chris, Patti, Abigail, Sadie, Ella and Joey Woods; Rich Glaser; Anthony Gordon; Fred Maurer; Donna Smith Remick; Hans Brolinson; and Suzanne Zlotnick. Nance Kerns organized the event for the Friends group.

Among the items of debris found in the park were a car tire, stove, music CD, plastic table, empty mulch bags, garden edging, ceramic angel, teddy bear, plastic pumpkin, Christmas bell decoration, bags of clothing, down vest, ice bag, bakery sign, empty water cooler jug, political signs, 30 cans of beer and a metal grate.

Next spring, the Friends of Poquessing will launch a series of clean up events focusing on different parts of the watershed park. Volunteers are sought.

Visit www.friendsofpoquessing.org in the spring to get the schedule. In the meantime, the group’s monthly bird walks at Benjamin Rush State Park are held on the third Sunday of each month, except December, at 8:30 a.m. ••
