Longtime Times’ printer dies at 69

Bob Nines

Bob Nines, who spent many years working as a printer for the Philadelphia Bulletin and Northeast Times, died last week. He was 69.

Nines is survived by his sons Robert Jr. (Claire) and Michael (Amanda); grandchildren Grace, Rose and Eva; sisters Peg Geiger, Julie Seums and Alice Cullen; brother Peter Nines; and many nieces and nephews.

A viewing was held Monday and Tuesday, and a funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Riverside, New Jersey.

A combat veteran of the Vietnam War, Nines was known for being a good, loyal friend to many. He had a gift for gab, liked to humor people and would bet on sporting events, especially games involving his beloved Phillies.

When it came time to eat, he enjoyed Philly favorites such as cheesesteaks and hoagies. Nines loved doo-wop music, and his house was decorated with vinyl records from that era. In the 1980s, the Northeast Times used his image for a billboard advertising campaign.

In addition to his jobs at newspapers, he worked as a shipfitter at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. After retiring, he continued as president of the Communication Workers of America/International Typographical Union as his way of fighting for the working guy.

In later years, he bought and sold collectibles at the Columbus Flea Market in South Jersey. ••
