Problems with Roosevelt Boulevard

Kudos to the sophomore students of Philadelphia Academy Charter School for their intelligent, well-thought out plans for the repairs to the Roosevelt Boulevard.

That being said, their ideas were neither affordable nor a quick-fix. Several years ago, the streets department tried a plan I thought was excellent but for some reason they soon discontinued it.

That was having separate green lights for either eastbound or westbound traffic. This plan reduces the waiting time for making left turns and consequently makes it safer to negotiate these turns. This is a cheap and quick fix.

The three intersections that most need this are at Grant Avenue, Red Lion Road and Byberry Road. As far as pedestrian bridges, these have already been tried and people just don’t use them.

Until there are increased fines for crossing the Boulevard where there are no crossings, this will continue.

Most of the pedestrian accidents that take place are caused by people crossing the Boulevard where there are no safe crossing lanes, not speed. Unfortunately, being hit by a car going 35 mph kills you just as dead as one going 60 mph.

Why graffiti on new Burlington store?

It is totally bewildering to think that anyone would graffiti the wall of the new Burlington Department Store, located at Cottman and Castor avenues.

Being that the building was shut down for over a decade, this person should thank Burlington for wanting to be part of the neighborhood.

Living in a different world, this person should come forth, apologize, and paint the wall, but being realistic this would never happen.

What a shame.

Kudos to Stanwood Pharmacy in Rhawnhurst

We live in the age of the supermarket, the super-discount store and the super-pharmacy. Each one is bigger and better than the last; or so we have been led to believe.

My family lives in the tight-knit neighborhood of Rhawnhurst, where super-size isn’t always the best. Just around the corner is our neighborhood pharmacy, not super-sized but definitely super special. Stan Camoon, the owner and pharmacist at Stanwood Pharmacy, has made it so.

He has created a comfortable space where concerns and sound advice are always available during store hours and beyond.

In addition to filling the normal prescriptions, Stan goes the extra mile to recommend and research the very best needed appliance at the best price for any particular ailment or condition.

Personal experience has convinced me that Stanwood Pharmacy can make anyone a satisfied customer. Stan’s understanding of a family’s situation has made him our go-to person, as a knowledgeable and trusted pharmacist, as well as our friend.

Stanwood Pharmacy is our spot for the best care at a time when care and concerns are so very important to our community. Thank you Stan.
