NE man charged with animal cruelty

A Morrell Park man has been accused of animal cruelty after a PSPCA officer found a ldquo;severely emaciated” dog in the basement of a home on the 3400 block of Morrell Ave. on Dec. 23.

Jeffrey Collins was charged after a PSPCA officer responded to an anonymous tip and found the dog, according to a society news release. The dog, an 8-month-old male pit bull named Santa Paws, was rushed to the University of Pennsylvania’s emergency veterinary facility and remains in critical condition. The animal was so weak, said George Bengal, the PSPCA’s humane enforcement director, it could not stand. It still couldn’t on Tuesday, he said. The dog has been surrendered to PSPCA custody, according to the news release. To report animal abuse, call the PSPCA’s hotline at 1–866–601-SPCA. ••
