Scholarships available for Tacony residents

The Joseph C. McCloskey Charitable Fund will be providing four college scholarships for students who live in Tacony.

Two women will receive money from the Elizabeth McCloskey Memorial Scholarship, while two men will receive money from the John C. Sullivan Jr. Scholarship.

The deadline to apply is April 15.

Poetry contest winners announced

The winners of the Ryerss Museum and Library Youth Poetry Contest will read their poems in celebration of National Poetry Month on April 4 at 1 p.m. in the second-floor gallery of Ryerss, located in Burholme Park. The winners are:

• Ninth grade: 1. Richard Spencer (Central); 2. Grace Brighter (St. Hubert).

• 10th grade: 1. Monica Volodarsky (Central); 2. Vy Tran (Central); 3. Jessica Zheng (Central). Honorable mention: Ashley Padolina (Central).

• 11th Grade: 1. Melisa Phung (Central); 2. Chelsea Dunn (Mercy Vocational).

• 12th Grade: 1. Danielle Talbot (St. Hubert); 2. Sarah Pimble (St. Hubert); 3. Nicole Vandermay (St. Hubert); 4. Kelsi Burns (St. Hubert). ••

Easter egg hunt is Saturday at Glen Foerd

Glen Foerd on the Delaware will ring in spring on Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the estate’s annual Easter egg hunt.

This year’s hunt has been planned as a continuous activity. Each child will receive a ticket for the hunt with admission ($5 per child), which allows them to hunt for up to 10 eggs that can be redeemed for up to 10 prizes. Additional tickets can be purchased. Guests are asked to bring their own baskets. Adult admission is free.

Thunderbird Lanes Bowling is helping present this year’s hunt. Other activities will include photo-ops with the Easter Bunny at the springtime well, a scavenger hunt, games and crafts. The Dining Car will sell a plethora of sweets. ••

Beef and beer to benefit marching band

A beef and beer to benefit the Archbishop Ryan High School Marching Raiders will take place on Saturday, March 28, from 8 p.m. to midnight at Ryan, 11201 Academy Road.

The cost is $30, which includes beer, food, a disc jockey and live music by Evryman Jack. Tickets are available at the door. All guests must be 21 or older and are welcome to BYOB.

St. Martha to host fundraiser

St. Martha, 11321 Academy Road, will hold a ticket picnic and auction on Saturday, March 28.

There will be a preview at 6 p.m. The event will start at 7. Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door, and include light picnic fare, drinks and 10 basket auction tickets.

Individuals must be 21 or older to attend.

Enjoy lunch with the Easter Bunny

St. Christopher School in Somerton invites the community to have lunch with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, March 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 13305 Proctor Road. in Holy Family Hall behind the church.

Children ages 2 to 8 can get their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny, play games, get their faces painted, enjoy arts and crafts and join an Easter egg hunt. Hot dogs, pretzels and cookies will be served. Admission costs $5 at the door. ••

Support St. Chris at Dragon Dash 5k

Runners and walkers can support St. Christopher School of Somerton in the Dragon Dash 5k and one-mile walk on Saturday, April 11. The event is open to all ages. The walk begins at 8 a.m. and the 5k at 8:30, starting at Trainer Hall next to the school at 13305 Proctor Road.

Cash prizes and awards will be given to winners. Visit www.pretzelcitysports.com to register. Those who register by March 31 will receive a T-shirt. The cost is $20 ($25 after March 31) plus $3.30 service fee. Race-day registration will be available at Trainer Hall from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Parking is available behind the school via the Lindsay Street lot entrance. ••

Fox Chase Farm to host flea market

Fox Chase Farm will present a public flea market on Saturday, April 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 8500 Pine Road. The market will offer fun for all ages and a variety of products from local vendors. Proceeds will benefit the Fox Chase Farm Agriculture Education Department, a campus of the School District of Philadelphia’s Swenson Arts & Technology High School.

Spaces of 10 feet by 10 feet are available for $20. Vendors may set up from 7 to 8 a.m. and should bring their own tables and/or tents. To register, call 215–728–5008 or email to [email protected]. ••

Locals help Roman win mock trial

Roman Catholic High School’s mock trial team defeated St. Joseph’s Prep, 9–0, to win the John S. Bradway Philadelphia High School Mock Trial Competition at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law. This is Roman’s second consecutive city title and third overall.

Roman’s team will represent Philadelphia in the state tournament, which will take place in Harrisburg on March 27 and 28. Team members include Northeast residents Kyle Westerfer, Thomas Leonard and Logan Moore, all seniors.••

Adult healthy living event is Thursday

Wesley Enhanced Living and Nazareth Hospital are co-sponsoring an Adult Healthy Living Series event.

On Thursday, March 26, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Wesley Enhanced Living Burholme, 7040 Oxford Ave., will host Stress Reduction and Relaxation Techniques. To register, call 267–348–3345. The event is free. ••

Northeast YMCA celebrates 50 years

The Northeast Family YMCA is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016 and wants to share the special anniversary with the Northeast community. Specifically, the YMCA is asking local folks to provide their old photos, anecdotes and memories of their participation in the agency’s multitude of programs over the years.

Contributions will be compiled leading up to the YMCA’s Birthday Bash on April 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. at 11088 Knights Road. Contact Paula Green at [email protected] or Anne Hugue at [email protected] or call the front desk at 215–632–0100.

The public is invited to attend the Birthday Bash. There is no fee but reservations are required. Please RSVP through the same contacts as above. Visitors will be treated to breakfast and an awards presentation where the YMCA will recognize its longest-serving staff and members. Guests will be able to meet local elected officials and learn more about YMCA programs while reflecting on fond memories of the past. ••

Event will celebrate Lawncrest tradition

Crescentville United Methodist Church, 412 Sentner St., will host a Women’s Fellowship Tea on Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m.

The group will commemorate the 100 years of Lawncrest’s 4th of July Celebration.

Local school to sponsor designer bag bingo

Louis H. Farrell Elementary School will sponsor designer bag bingo on April 16 at Cottage Green, 9001 Ashton Road.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and bingo starts at 6:30.

Scrapbook workshop at Holmesburg Library

Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave. (at Hartel Avenue), will be having a scrapbook workshop on Saturday, March 28, at 1 p.m.

Participants will learn how to lay out scrapbook pages using embellishments and colorful background paper.

Free trees available

The city Department of Parks and Recreation will be giving away more than 2,000 trees as part of its new TreePhilly initiative.

Residents are encouraged to register for up to two free trees in advance. Trees can be picked up from the Pennypack Environmental Center, 8600 Verree Road, on April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
