Juniors invited to college event

The guidance departments of Father Judge and St. Hubert high schools will host a Junior Night on Wednesday, April 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the auditorium of St. Hubert, Torresdale and Cottman avenues.

Anyone is welcome, particularly 11th-grade students and their parents. ••

Settlement anniversary is Saturday

Settlement Music School’s Kardon-Northeast Branch will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its location at 3745 Clarendon Ave. with a variety of activities and performances on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be musical and dance performances.

Basketball tourney at Klein JCC

The first Kurt Herman 5-on-5 Memorial Basketball Tournament will take place from April 16–20 at Klein JCC, 10100 Jamison Ave.

The competition will benefit the Klein JCC’s athletic department.

Teams may compete in any of four age-specific categories: 18 to 29 years, 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years and age 50 and older.

Registration is $200 per team, and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category.

Gala for dads and daughters is April 25

All dads and special male guests are invited to join their little girls in a gala on Saturday, April 25, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Calvary A.A., 4330 Deerpath Lane.

The cost is $40 per couple. Each additional girl is $10. The event is open to all girls in kindergarten through eighth grade. The attire is semi-formal.

Craft show scheduled at Delaire Landing

Delaire Landing, 9355 State Road, will hold a craft, home and gift show on Saturday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will take place in the recreation center.

All proceeds benefit the March of Dimes. ••

SPARC to hold open house and reunion

Project SPARC will hold an open house and alumni reunion on Thursday, April 30, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Northeast High School.

The formal program will begin at 6:15 p.m.

Visitors will meet with SPARC students and faculty, tour the SPARC wing, observe a mission in operation and take part in a silent auction.

Light refreshments will be served.

Affordable prom dresses available

The Jewish Family and Children’s Service Thrift Boutique, 8948 Frankford Ave. in Holmesburg, sells affordable prom dresses and accessories.

The dresses cost $30 or less. The boutique also has shoes and bags.

The store is located in Shelly Plaza, next to Food Basics. It is open Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m.; Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Event will celebrate Lawncrest tradition

Crescentville United Methodist Church, 412 Sentner St., will host a Women’s Fellowship Tea on Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. The group will commemorate the 100 years of Lawncrest’s 4th of July Celebration.

All-ages concert at Bull Shooters

Zach Myers of Shinedown will be in concert on Thursday, April 23, at 8 p.m. at Bull Shooters Saloon, 14000 Bustleton Ave. in Somerton.

Other performers will be J.R. Moore, Zack Mack, Frank Viele and Derek Crider.

It’s an all-ages acoustic concert, but guests must be 21 or older to drink. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Cafe Lava to host big band concert April 30

Jazz Celebration Big Band will perform on Thursday, April 30, from 8 to 10 p.m. at Cafe Lava, 13033 Bustleton Ave. (at Byberry Road).

The band will feature vocalist Claudia Perry.

The 17-piece jazz orchestra will perform the repertoire of Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich, along with original compositions and arrangements by members of the band.

Support group is for parents of addicts

A new support and grieving group for parents of drug addicts will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, May 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Northeast GED Center, at 1928 Cottman Ave., between Castor and Loretto avenues.

The group is for parents who have lost children to drugs or have children using drugs. Meetings will be held the second Tuesday of each month.

The group is being organized by Bonnie Kaye, a professional counselor who lost her daughter Jennifer to heroin in 2002. She has been working to help other parents since that time.

“The goal is to help parents whose children have died from drugs to get through the grieving process and to give support to others who are currently losing their children to drugs,” she said.

Constituents can choose bus shelter locations

City Councilman Brian O’Neill is seeking recommendations from his constituents for the location or replacement of 10 new bus shelters in the 10th Councilmanic District.

As part of its new street furniture contract, the city will be replacing 30 existing bus shelters with a more modern design. The Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Utilities has asked each member of Council to recommend 10 locations.

Klein JCC receives generous donation

Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, a subsidiary of Bank of America, recently presented a check for $7,500 to Andre Krug, president and CEO of the Klein JCC, 10100 Jamison Ave.

The grant was earmarked to recognize programs that provide food for 3,500 seniors annually.

The presentation was made at a luncheon for 175 Klein JCC senior members.

The Klein JCC, in conjunction with RSVP/Philadelphia, provides 70,000 meals annually to homebound seniors who cannot shop or cook for themselves in Philadelphia, Bucks and Montgomery counties. ••

Vogt seeking girls volleyball players

Vogt Recreation Center, 6700 Cottage St. in Tacony, will host travel volleyball games for girls age 10–14 on Thursdays from mid-June to mid-August.

Games will be played from 5 to 7 p.m.

CTCA debuts cancer documentary

Cancer Treatment Centers of America recently hosted a preview screening of the documentary Ken Burns Presents Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies.

The event took place at WHYY-TV, 150 N. 6th St.

The evening included a panel discussion with Dr. Maurie Markman, president of medicine and science at CTCA, and Dr. Pamela Crilley, chief of medical oncology at the hospital.

In addition, there was a photography exhibit that highlighted milestones in the quest for a cure for cancer. John McNeil, president and CEO of CTCA’s hospital at 1331 E. Wyoming Ave., delivered remarks.

Burns’ documentary aired on PBS on March 30–31 and April 1. ••

Haken show scheduled at Bull Shooters

The rock band Haken will be in concert on Friday, May 1, at Bull Shooters, 14000 Bustleton Ave. in Somerton. Other bands in concert that night will be Next to None, In the Presence of Wolves and Tungsten.

Parks and Rec is hiring lifeguards

The city Department of Parks and Recreation is hiring summer lifeguards.

Anyone not yet certified can enroll in a class at one of three locations, including the pool at Abraham Lincoln High School.

Event to raise money for heart research

There will be a benefit craft fair and flea market on the 6600 block of Walker St. in Tacony on Sunday, May 17, from noon to 5 p.m.

The vendor fee is $20, and vendors must bring their own tables. Tents are permitted. The day will include raffles and food.

Proceeds benefit congenital heart defect research.

Photo classes available at Holmesburg Library

Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave. (at Hartel Avenue), will hold photography classes in May.

The classes, sponsored by Friends of Holmesburg Library, will teach people to take photos using digital cameras and smartphones.

Jeanes Hospital hosts free seminars

Jeanes Hospital, 7600 Central Ave., will host three free seminars on joint replacement surgery. People considering hip or knee replacement are encouraged to attend.

Free trees available to city residents

The city Department of Parks and Recreation will be giving away more than 2,000 trees as part of its new TreePhilly initiative.

Residents are encouraged to register for up to two free trees in advance. Trees can be picked up from the Pennypack Environmental Center, 8600 Verree Road, on April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

St. Bartholomew Church, at Harbison and Cheltenham avenues in Wissinoming, will hold a Penny Party on Sunday, May 3, starting at noon.

Klein JCC celebrating 40th anniversary

The Klein JCC, 10100 Jamison Ave., will host a 40th anniversary festival on Sunday, May 3, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The cost is $10. Children under 12 are admitted free.
