Local park announces nature walk

The first session of Nature’s Hidden Surprises, a free monthly morning nature walk series in Tacony Creek Park, will be held on Wednesday, May 6, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Walkers will meet at I Street and Ramona Avenue. “Invasive Plants vs. Native Plants” will be the topic of discussion.

Three days later, on Saturday, May 9, there will be a free Bird Walk in Tacony Creek Park from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Walkers will meet at Roosevelt Boulevard and Bingham Street on the north side of the Boulevard near New Life Church. Expert birder Keith Russell of the Audubon Society will lead the walk which should cross paths with woodpeckers, chickadees, hawks and other species. Binoculars, coffee and doughnuts will be provided.

Free event for seniors at KleinLife

KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., invites senior citizens to attend a free program focusing on emergency preparedness on Wednesday, May 13, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Participants will have the chance to assemble an emergency kit that they can take home.

DRCC holding fundraiser

The Delaware River City Corporation’s fifth annual spring fling will take place on Thursday, May 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Glen Foerd on the Delaware, 5001 Grant Ave.

The event is sponsored by Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. There will be free valet parking.

Honorees will be former congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (Robert A. Borski Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award), James A. Donaghy (Outstanding Service Award), Wooden Boat Factory (Community Organization of the Year) and Joseph Jennings (Certificate of Appreciation for Volunteerism).

Glen Foerd open for 2015 tour season

Discover the people and stories behind the only remaining Delaware riverfront estate in Philadelphia open to the public, Glen Foerd on the Delaware, as it opens its doors for the 2015 tour season.

The mansion at Glen Foerd is open to visitors every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Guided museum tours provide insight into the lives of the former owners of the estate as well as the mansion’s butler and governess. Tours last about one hour and will include each of the mansion’s nine rooms.

Admission is free for Glen Foerd members, $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and students, $3 for children 5 to 12 or free for children under 5. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Glen Foerd participates in the Blue Star Museum Program, providing free admission to active military members and up to five of their family members.

Flapjack fundraiser is at Applebee’s

Philadoptables will sponsor a flapjack fundraiser on Saturday, May 16, from 8 to 10 a.m. at Applebee’s, 9142 Roosevelt Blvd.

The cost is $10 for flapjacks and sausage. Proceeds benefit the city animal shelter.

KleinLife has senior programs available

KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., will offer numerous upcoming programs on Mondays and Tuesdays.

On Monday, May 11, there will be a current events discussion at 10 a.m., a 1950s program at 11:15 a.m. and a creative greeting card class at 1 p.m.

Also on May 11, there will be a musical revue from 10:30 a.m. to noon in honor of longtime radio host Gene Shay.

On Tuesdays, movies will be shown at 10 a.m. The schedule consists of Whiplash on May 12, Mr. Turner on May 19, Two Faces of Eve on May 26 and A Matter of Taste on June 2.

Nazareth Hospital golf classic will be in June

The 31st annual Nazareth Hospital Foundation Golf Classic will take place on Wednesday, June 17, at the Union League Golf Club of Torresdale (formerly Torresdale-Frankford Country Club), 3801 Grant Ave.

Registration and a buffet lunch will start at 11 a.m. The tournament will begin with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. The day concludes with cocktails, dinner and an awards program.

Philadelphia Folk Festival announces lineup

The 54th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival will take place from Aug. 14–16 at Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township, Montgomery County.

The event will feature music, dance, crafts, camping and children’s activities on 80 acres of ground.

Major exhibit coming to the Parkway

Saint-Gobain, one of the world’s largest building materials companies, commemorates its 350th anniversary with a never-before-seen global exhibition, “Future Sensations,” which will be on display May 30 to June 6 at The Oval, located on the northwest end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Free to visit, Future Sensations features five distinct ephemeral pavilions that take visitors on a sensory journey of science, storytelling and art that celebrates the past three-and-a-half centuries and offers glimpses into future innovations that will transform the world.

The touring exhibition makes four stops across the globe, including Shanghai, China; São Paulo, Brazil; Paris, France; and Philadelphia.

Each of the five pavilions weighs between 20 and 50 metric tons. They range in height from 13 to 32 feet.

Future Sensations will be complemented by a pop-up beer garden and a variety of food trucks. ••

Jeopardy winner can spell, too

Archbishop Ryan High School recently hosted its 11th annual invitational spelling bee for seventh-graders.

The winner was Ryan Elkins of Saint Charles Borromeo in Bensalem. Ryan, a former winner of Kid Week on Jeopardy, lasted 19 rounds, finally winning on the word “questionnaire.” He earned a four-year, $2,000 scholarship to Ryan.

In second place was Rebecca Moroz of Saint Anselm in Parkwood. Rebecca won a tiebreaker against the third-place finisher, Lara Serna, of Saint Charles Borromeo. She was awarded a four-year, $1,000 scholarship to Ryan. Lara was the winner of a four-year, $500 scholarship.

The event included 16 Catholic grade schools and 50 seventh-grade students throughout the Philadelphia and Bucks County areas. ••

Second-hand items needed

Ann’s Attic, Holmesburg United Methodist Church’s second-hand shop, is in need of donations.

Attic workers are looking for new or gently used household items, knick-knacks and jewelry. No clothes or electronics will be accepted.

Interested donors are asked to drop off their items any Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

KleinLife is looking for centenarians

Coach Bag Bingo to be held May 29

The Tacony Civic Association will sponsor Coach Bag Bingo on Friday, May 29, at Our Lady of Consolation Church hall, 7051 Tulip St.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Bingo starts at 7 p.m.

The cost is $30. There will be Chinese auctions and 50/50 drawings.

E-cycle event at St. Hubert

St. Hubert High School will accept donations of electronics on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Accepted items include those that are broken or have missing parts.

A $20 fee is required to recycle glass tube televisions and computer monitors. The cost is $10 to shred old hard drives. Electronics can be dropped off curbside on Ditman Street, between Cottman Avenue and Bleigh Avenue.

Philly ZOA meeting is May 11

The Philadelphia Zionist Organization of America will meet on Monday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, 9768 Verree Road.

The guest speakers will be Alan Feldman, Jonathan Goldstein and Mark Genatempo.

The topics will include a basic overview of self-defense, firearms and personal and home security.
