Head of the class: The Kiwanis Club of Phil-Mont recently presented scholarship awards to Nikki Meehan and Alec Heydt.
The Kiwanis Club of Phil-Mont recently presented scholarship awards to two local eighth-graders.
The April 22 dinner took place at Ann’s Choice, a retirement Community in Warminster.
The 11th annual Anthony M. Leto Community Service Awards went to Nikki Meehan, who attends Presentation BVM and will enroll at Little Flower for high school, and Alec Heydt, who attends Baldi Middle School.
Nikki and Alec attended St. William Elementary School before it closed in 2012. They each received $500. The award is based on grades and community service. Nikki and Alec both have older brothers who’ve won the award.
The awards are named in memory of Tony Leto, a businessman and Kiwanis president who died suddenly in 2004 on his 40th birthday.
The ceremony was held at Ann’s Choice because Frank Leto, Tony’s dad, lives there.
In appreciation, past scholarship winners wrote letters to Frank Leto that were included in a book.
Those who contributed letters were Seamus O’Brien, Mary Conrad, Mary Radziszewski, Brendan Heydt, Joshua Cruz, John Meehan, Victoria Dailey and Dorothy Delerme. All graduated from St. William except Dailey, who attended Presentation after St. William closed.
The scholarship fund and awards dinner are coordinated by Kiwanis officials Kathy McDonough, Bill Markert and Frank Oldt. ••
