Fifty-eight volunteers, including folks from AgustaWestland Corp., the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, Haverford College and the Community Life Improvement Program, removed 97 bags of litter from Pennypack Park during the Friends of Pennypack Park’s annual Earth Day cleanup on April 25.
Workers concentrated their efforts on the Little City area of the park, including the Rhawn Street entrance, parking lots and nearby trails. They donated a combined 146–1/2 volunteer hours.

In addition to the 97 bags of litter, workers collected three bags of recyclable cans and a litany of random large items including a shopping cart, a 16-gallon tote box, a 17-gallon tub, a tall kitchen trash bin, a five-gallon bucket, a broken floor lamp, a beer bong, part of a leaf rake, a television, part of a dining room chair, a flip-flop, a Croc shoe, a baby rattle and pacifier, a beach ball, a fishing net, parts of two windshields, a gas cap, broken taillight lenses, three hubcaps, a motorcycle tire, a car radiator cover, a traffic cone, a rusted piece of a 55-gallon drum and a saddle stirrup.
The Friends of Pennypack Park will meet for their next monthly cleanup on Saturday, May 23, at the Sandy Run entrance near Ryan Avenue and Sandyford Road. The event will last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All volunteers are welcome. Gloves, bags and tools will be supplied. Volunteers should wear closed toe shoes, pants and long sleeves. Snacks and refreshments will be served. Inclement weather may force cancellation.
