Here are some statements from local public officials following last week’s deadly Amtrak train derailment in Port Richmond:
Gov. Tom Wolf: “My thoughts and prayers are with all of those impacted by tonight’s train derailment. For those who lost their lives, those who were injured and the families of all involved, this situation is devastating. I want to sincerely thank our first responders for their brave and quick action. I am closely monitoring the situation and I am in contact with state and local authorities.”
Lt. Gov. Mike Stack: “My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives and to those who were injured in the tragic Amtrak train accident last night. I am sure many Pennsylvanians join me as we keep them in our prayers. Thanks also to the brave first responders who were on the scene quickly, and to the personnel at Philadelphia-area medical facilities who treated the victims.”
U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle: “My deepest condolences go out to those who died and the dozens who were injured and traumatized in this tragedy, and my gratitude goes out to the police, fire and emergency medical technicians who rushed to their aid. Nearly 250 people were on that train, and any one of us could have been among them. As we help the victims and their families recover, and to correct whatever went wrong with Train 188, we must restore the public’s faith in Amtrak’s role as a vital transit provider in the Northeast Corridor.
“We must never take for granted the bravery of the hundreds of emergency responders and police officers who navigated the mangled steel to usher the survivors to safety.
Archbishop Charles Chaput: ”I’ve followed news of the tragic Amtrak train derailment in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia last night with deep sadness and concern. In the wake of this disaster, I urge all people of good will to join me in extending prayerful condolences to those mourning the sudden loss of a loved one and in asking the Lord to bring healing to all those suffering physical and emotional anguish in the wake of this incident. Let us also pray for all of the first responders, emergency personnel and medical professionals who have been working to assist those affected by the derailment. May God bless and protect them.”
City Council President Darrell Clarke: “My heart is heavy for those who perished in this horrific tragedy, and for their loved ones. I am joined by all Philadelphians in rooting for those who survived to heal. I also am immensely proud of our police, firefighters and other first responders who reacted quickly and professionally to rescue dozens of passengers. And to all the civilians who rushed to the scene to offer their assistance, thank you for showing who we Philadelphians really are. Many of the injured are in the highly capable hands of our world-class hospitals, and I wish all a speedy recovery.
“Images of the wreckage tell just part of the story. This tragedy occurred on a heavily travelled and incredibly important route for those who live and work along the Northeast Corridor. I urge a full and thorough investigation into what went wrong so that government at all levels can work to prevent this horror from ever occurring again.” ••
