Two violent car accidents within minutes of each other last Thursday night in the Northeast left one man dead and another hospitalized.
The fatal crash occurred at about 9 p.m. on Roosevelt Boulevard near Conwell Avenue and claimed the life of Charles Barr, 63, of the 5300 block of Roosevelt Blvd. in Oxford Circle. Barr was traveling in the northbound inner lanes when he lost control of his 2000 Nissan Maxima, which crossed over a grassy median, struck a tree and came to rest in the outer lanes, police said.
Emergency responders pulled Barr from the mangled wreck but he died at the scene as a result of head and chest injuries. There were no other occupants of the car. No other vehicles were involved. Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Separately, officers were called to the 9000 block of Torresdale Ave. at about 9:11 p.m. as a Chevy sedan struck the rear of a parked long-haul trailer. Emergency responders pulled the 52-year-old driver from the car, which showed severe damage primarily to the front passenger side. There were no other occupants of the car. Paramedics took the driver to Aria Health’s Torresdale Division in stable condition. Authorities did not release his name.
The trailer had been parked curbside, but there was no tractor attached to it. It had a Maine license plate but there was no registered owner. ••
