Thomas Ewing and his pals decided to walk home from the bar. That’s what you’re supposed to do, right?

But despite that measure of caution, the night ended in tragedy anyway as a man in a truck stopped and stabbed Ewing to death early Saturday after the 21-year-old Lexington Park resident had warned the motorist about driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

The slaying occurred at about 2:54 a.m. on the 7300 block of Revere St. in Mayfair, said Philadelphia police, who found the victim lying on the ground with multiple stab wounds of the chest and torso. Paramedics took Ewing to Aria Health’s Torresdale hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:28 a.m.

Specific circumstances, the motive and the identity of the killer remain a mystery according to information released officially by the police department. But witnesses have revealed several key details to the news media. According to published reports, Ewing departed his home on the 7600 block of Hartel Ave. late on Friday to socialize with friends at Owen’s Cafe on Cottman Avenue near Revere.

A few hours later, he and friends were walking northbound on Revere after leaving the bar. A pickup truck drove up the block in the wrong direction (it’s a southbound-only street). There was an exchange of words involving Ewing and someone inside the truck. The vehicle stopped. A man exited, stabbed Ewing and fled.

One witness attempted to administer CPR to the victim and others tried to help him to his feet, according to one broadcast report. Police have said they are looking for a Hispanic man wearing a white T-shirt and shorts and operating a dark blue or black Ford full-size pickup truck with a covered bed.
