State Rep. Ed Neilson was sworn into office last week to represent the 174th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
Before winning a special election Aug. 11, Neilson served as an at-large city councilman and as a state representative for the 169th Legislative District, which had been located in the Northeast, but has since been relocated to York County in redistricting.
“I am glad to be back in Harrisburg and I am ready to get to work advocating for the people of Philadelphia,” Neilson said. “While there are many important issues to tackle, ending the budget impasse is one of my top priorities. Too often, partisan ideals get in the way of workable policy, and it is my hope to change that.”
Neilson’s legislative interests include job creation, improving public safety, increasing educational opportunities throughout Philadelphia, addressing the problem of absentee landlords and honoring and protecting the elderly.
“Ensuring our children are ready for a modern workforce is essential to the future prosperity of this commonwealth, and the only way to prepare a modern workforce is with a world-class education system,” Neilson said. “Of equal importance to me is how our city and state treat the elderly in our communities. I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues to create real and effective solutions to those issues.”
Neilson, who is a lifelong member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98, also served as deputy secretary of labor for former Gov. Ed Rendell.
ldquo;As anyone in Harrisburg can tell you, I am very passionate but that doesn’t mean I am unwilling to compromise,” Neilson said. “In my experience as a public official, I have worked with colleagues from both sides of the aisle to achieve accomplishments that will make a difference in the lives of Pennsylvanians across the state, such as the establishment of the Dyslexia and Early Literacy Intervention Pilot Program. I intend to hit the ground running to get meaningful work like that done to benefit the commonwealth as a whole.”
