Teenager killed during forklift joyride

Joyriding by a group of teenagers on forklifts in a Wissinoming paper factory ended in death for one of the youths on Sunday night.

It happened at about 9:19 p.m. According to police, five juveniles sneaked into the Newman Paper Company at 6100 Tacony St. through a hole in a perimeter fence and began driving the unattended forklifts for fun. A 13-year-old girl crashed her forklift into one being driven by a 14-year-old boy. The boy’s vehicle toppled over, pinning him. He suffered fatal head trauma in the crash. Police did not say if he was hospitalized or died at the scene.

After someone called 911 to report a person screaming, the four survivors met police on the street and led them to the accident scene. No arrests were made, although the incident remains under investigation.

A security guard for the company told police that he had last checked the yard at 8:30 p.m., when there was no sign of trouble, police said. ••
