Two hundred military veteran bicyclists rolled into Maggie’s Waterfront Cafe on Sept. 29 for a brief respite on their Army vs. Navy Challenge from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
The six-day, 400-mile ride was a program of Ride 2 Recovery, an independent veterans organization that uses cycling programs to “restore hope and purpose” to injured combat veterans.
Philadelphia Highway Patrol officers, a fire department company and the Army National Guard all helped greet the cyclists for their lunch break at the East Torresdale restaurant. Ride 2 Recovery conducts more than a half-dozen similar challenges annually around the country and overseas, with 200 participants in each. It accepts donations of services and money from businesses and individuals along each route.
