Reward offered in shooting case

Surveillance photo

Philadelphia police have released a new composite sketch and announced $6,000 in reward money for the capture of the robber who shot a 75-year-old Mayfair woman on Dec. 31 as she walked home from a supermarket.

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 is putting up $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the gunman, while the Citizens Crime Commission is offering another $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender.

Authorities have described the gunman as Hispanic and in his late 20s with a trimmed beard and red knit cap. He drove a 2004–08 model year Nissan Maxima, white or silver in color, with a moonroof and damage along the passenger side. Surveillance video of the incident shows the car in plain view, but the driver is obscured. The video is viewable on the Philadelphia Police channel on YouTube.com.

The shooting occurred at about 9:50 a.m. in a driveway to the rear of the 7100 block of Montague St. Police found a pool of blood and a trail leading to a neighboring street. That’s where they found the victim, who was suffering from a gunshot wound of the face.

The woman told police that she was walking home with a couple of bags of groceries when a man pulled up next to her in a car, grabbed her handbag and threatened to shoot her. During a struggle, the man shot the victim once in the face, then fled with the handbag, which contained $400 cash and a cell phone.

He was last seen traveling south toward Montague Street then east on Princeton Avenue. Meanwhile, the victim walked home and called police, who took her to Aria Health’s Torresdale campus. She has been released and is recovering.
