Thirteen volunteers for the Friends of Pennypack Park braved a series of rains as they removed 19 bags of trash and other assorted items from the Little City area of the park on April 23 in commemoration of Earth Day.
The hardy souls included Joan Henry Graham, Katya Rebensky, Kathy Volack, George and Gail Scholl, Robert McMunn, Ken Lewis, Karen and Abigail Fox, Karen Kaczorek, Roland Williams, Jim Smyth and Nance Kerns. They donated a combined 43 hours of their time.
In addition to the 19 bags of trash, volunteers collected a bag of recyclable cans and one car tire. The haul included many unusual items including a piece of vinyl siding, a “happy birthday” balloon, two shoes, a pair of sneakers, a license plate, a car floor mat, car trim, part of a car’s steering assembly, a car antenna, a balance beam, a tree made of bottles, an Allyson Schwartz campaign sign (from 2014), a charred bicycle and a Cheshire cat cell phone case.
The Friends of Pennypack Park’s next monthly cleanup event will be held on Saturday, May 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All volunteers are welcome. They will meet at the Sandy Run entrance near Ryan Avenue and Sandyford Road, next to Austin Meehan Middle School. Volunteers should wear long pants and sturdy but comfortable shoes or sneakers. Sunscreen and bug repellent are strongly recommended. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Organizers will supply gloves, tools and refreshments.
