Donations sought to help sergeant diagnosed with cancer

Members of the Philadelphia Police Department’s Northeast Detectives are asking for the public’s help in supporting one of their own through a very difficult time. Sgt. Heriberto “Eddie” Ortiz was recently diagnosed with cancer and his co-workers are raising money to support his care and his family’s needs. Ortiz is 43, married and the father of a teenage daughter.

The primary way to donate is through the “Support our Philadelphia Police Sgt” page posted by Jon Demnisky on GoFundMe.com. In one month, the page has already generated more than $13,000 for the cause. Members of the Philadelphia Police Department’s Engine 2 and Ladder 3 also made a substantial donation. Ortiz’ friends visit him regularly and say that his spirits are “phenomenal.” He maintains a positive attitude and outlook. But he and his family could use some support from the community. ••
