Woman, 68, killed after car and truck collide

A 68-year-old Holmesburg woman died of injuries she suffered when a pickup truck struck the car she was driving at Woodhaven and Knights roads last Thursday morning.

Gloria Szarek, of the 3400 block of Sheffield Ave., had a boy, 6, and girl, 10, in her 2003 Nissan Maxima and was driving southbound on Knights shortly after 11 a.m. As Szarek’s car passed through the intersection, a 2010 Ford F-250 was traveling westbound in the Woodhaven access road and struck the driver’s side of the Nissan, propelling the car into a guardrail.

Szarek became trapped in her car. Firefighters extricated her from the vehicle. Paramedics took her to Aria Health’s Torresdale campus, where she was pronounced dead at 12:22 p.m. as a result of undisclosed injuries. Paramedics also took the two children to the same hospital. They suffered minor abrasions.

The driver of the Ford, a 38-year-old man, sustained no reported injuries. The cause of the crash remains under police investigation. ••
