The Kiwanis Club of Phil-Mont recently presented scholarship awards to two local students.
The June 15 dinner took place at Hop Angel Brauhaus in Fox Chase.
The Phil-Mont Kiwanis Walter Gimbel Scholarship Fund provided scholarships to Jessica Breuning, who’ll be a senior at Cabrini, and Rebecca Johnson, a recent graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School who’ll be attending Temple University.
Breuning, a Rockledge resident who turned 21 the day after the dinner, was accompanied by her parents, Jim and Marie, and brother, James. She studies graphic design and plays soccer and lacrosse at Cabrini, located in Radnor. She has a 3.04 grade point average. Cabrini will assume university status on July 1.
In both sports, she was a first team All-Colonial States Athletic Conference selection and helped her team win the conference championship. She was the CSAC Defensive Player of the Year in lacrosse last season.
Johnson, of West Mayfair, was accompanied to the dinner by her parents, Ed and Helene, and her younger brother, Stephen, who just completed fifth grade at St. Matthew.
At McDevitt, she took all honors or advanced placement classes. She was ranked in the top 10 in her class. She was a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and National English Honor Society.
She was a member of the Community Service Corps; Best Friends Club, working with special-needs children; and the Key Club, helping to collect socks for the homeless. She was also manager of the stage crew for three years.
At Temple, she will major in theater and minor in English.
The scholarship fund and awards dinner are coordinated by Kiwanis officials Kathy McDonough, Bill Markert and Frank Oldt. ••
