Northeast Celebration to be held Saturday at Max Myers

The Take Back Your Neighborhood civic association will sponsor its annual Northeast Celebration on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Max Myers Playground, 1601 Hellerman St.

The day will include free food, music, a schoolbag giveaway, a magician, caricature artist, clowns, balloons, a glitter tattoo artist, carnival games, face painting, nail painting, train rides, spin art, flu shots, diabetes screenings and blood pressure monitoring and appearances by the Philadelphia Zoo, Academy of Natural Sciences, Franklin Institute, Fleisher Art Memorial and Clay Studio.

Home Depot will give lessons to children.

Elected officials and members of their staffs will be in attendance.

There will also be a tribute at 11:30 a.m. to outgoing state Rep. Mark Cohen.

The sponsors are Verizon, Gordon Chevrolet, City Councilwoman Maria Quinones Sanchez and Councilman Bobby Henon.

Budweiser Clydesdales will march to Maggie’s

The Budweiser Clydesdales will be the star attraction at the free Northeast Philadelphia Community Day presented by City Councilman Bobby Henon and state Rep. Mike Driscoll, and hosted by Maggie’s Waterfront Cafe this Saturday, Aug. 27, from 1 to 8 p.m.

The family-oriented event will also feature pony rides, a moon bounce, live music (including performances by a bagpipe band), a firefighting boat on the Delaware River, hamburgers, hot dogs, soft pretzels and water ice. Sponsors include US Foods, Penn Beer, Philly Pretzel Factory, Dunphy Ford and Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. Maggie’s Waterfront Cafe is at 9242 N. Delaware Ave. ••

Northeast thrift shop will reopen in September

Temple Menorah Keneseth Chai’s thrift shop, 4301 Tyson Ave., will reopen on Sunday, Sept. 4. Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop is also open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 215–624–9130. ••

PPH hosting Caribbean fiesta on Friday

The Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6500 Tabor Ave., will host a Caribbean fiesta on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. in its social hall. WBCB (1490 AM) will play music from the 1940s, ’50s and ‘60s.

Block party to be held at Lawndale church

Grace Community Bible Church, 648 Knorr St. in Lawndale, will hold a block party on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The community is invited to the free event. Applications taken for weight-loss program

The nonprofit Trevose Behavior Modification Program is accepting applications for its weight-loss program. There are a few openings in the group that meets on Thursday mornings in Bustleton.

Applicants must need to lose 20 to 80 pounds.

Philadelphia Fire Department now hiring

The deadline is Sept. 2 to complete an online application for the Philadelphia Fire Department.

The starting salary ranges from $47,920 to $66,554.

‘Alvin & The Chipmunks’ coming to the Devon

City Councilman Bobby Henon is sponsoring a showing of the movie Alvin & The Chipmunks on Friday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the Devon Theater, 6325 Frankford Ave. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. ••

Henon offers extended office hours

City Councilman Bobby Henon and his 6th district office staff will conduct evening hours on Monday, Aug. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Tacony LAB, 6918 Torresdale Ave.

Usually Henon’s office is open only during daytime hours, so this is an opportunity to help constituents with questions and issues. This three-hour session will also offer free art programming for children and light refreshments. Walk-ins are welcome. No registration is required. ••

Two free concerts announced in Tacony

Tacony will host two free concerts this summer.

Disston Recreation Center, 4423 Longshore Ave., will be the site of a concert on Aug. 25 featuring Scribe Video Center Street Movies and Mike Shackleton.

On Sept. 8, Lardner’s Point Park, Levick Street and the Delaware River, will host a concert by Sean K. Preston and The Loaded Pistols.

Both concerts start at 7 p.m. ••

Grief support group holding meetings

Donna Glatz, widow of slain Lawncrest jeweler William Glatz, will hold upcoming sessions of Heal Your Heart From Loss. The James E. Kinney Senior Center, 165 Township Road in Richboro, will host sessions on Aug. 24, Sept. 21 and Oct. 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Caregiver seminar open to public

A professional from Jefferson Elder Care will present on understanding and addressing challenging common behaviors with dementia.

St. Hubert 75th gala is at Vie

St. Hubert High School will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a gala at Vie, 600 N. Broad St., on Friday, Nov. 18, from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Tickets cost $200 and include a cocktail reception, sit-down dinner, open bar, dessert buffet and live music.

Church thrift shop will reopen

Ann’s Attic, Holmesburg United Methodist Church’s second-hand shop, will reopen from the summer break on Wednesday, September 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The shop features household items, knick-knacks, jewelry, clothes, handbags, toys and tapes and CDs.

No item is over $5.

Ann’s Attic is located beneath the sanctuary of the church, 8118 Frankford Ave. Donations are accepted during business hours.

Proceeds from the shop support programs and services of the church, including the King’s Kitchen, the church’s daily meal program, as well as the weekly food cupboard. ••

Frankford announces reunion

The 1966 class of Frankford High School, the 100th graduating class, is planning a 50th-year reunion.

The event will be held on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 15, at The Buck Hotel, 1200 Buck Road in Feasterville-Trevose.

Senior center sponsoring shore trip

The Rosemary Montagno Senior Center, 12601 Townsend Road, is sponsoring a trip to Wildwood from Sept. 11–15.

The cost is $490. There will be five days and four nights at the Adventurer Motor Inn.

The trip includes four full breakfasts, lunch and tour of Renault Winery, four dinners and time at Resorts Casino.

Smoking cessation classes at Nazareth

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will offer a series of free smoking and tobacco cessation classes to individuals looking to quit smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and/or smokeless tobacco use.

Sessions include understanding addiction, behavior change strategies, coping mechanisms for urges and stress, education on healthy lifestyle choices, access to resources for nicotine replacement therapy and relapse prevention.

The classes will take place on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., from Sept. 14 to Oct. 26 in the seventh-floor rehab conference room.

Dance registration at Chalfont Rec Center

Registration for Chalfont Recreation Center’s 2016–17 dance program will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, from noon to 2 p.m.

Chalfont Dancers is a dance program run through the city Department of Parks and Recreation.

Chalfont Recreation Center is located at 4330–34 Deerpath Lane.

The style of dance taught includes creative, ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and hip hop.

The classes are for people ages 3 to adult.

Classes meet once a week for an hour. They run from the first week of October until the end of March.

Applications now accepted for Neighborhood Assistance Program

Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development is seeking applications for the Neighborhood Assistance Program, which provides tax credits to encourage community organizations to invest in projects that serve distressed areas or support conservation efforts. The deadline is Sept. 16.

The state’s 2016–17 fiscal budget includes $18 million in NAP funding within the tax code. The program has five main components:

• Projects that serve distressed areas or that support neighborhood conservation that fall under affordable housing, community services, crime prevention, education, job training or neighborhood assistance;

• Projects that target specific problems that the state has designated as priorities in distressed areas;

• Long-term collaborations (five years or more) among business, government and community leaders to produce comprehensive, asset-based and relationship-driven approaches to community development;

• Charitable food programs that help regional food banks and emergency food providers; and,

• Enterprize zones programs for companies that invest in the rehabilitation, expansion or improvement of buildings or land within designated zones.

Grants available to assist yard-tree giveaways

TreePhilly in partnership with the Fairmount Park Conservancy and TD Bank is offering five grants of $500 along with 50 or 100 trees to Philadelphia community groups who wish to organize yard-tree giveaways in their neighborhoods this autumn.

Grant recipients will distribute free yard trees, such as fruit trees, flowering trees and shade trees, to their communities in October and November. Grant recipients will also receive $500 to underwrite the cost of the project, as well as event planning assistance and educational support from TreePhilly.

Civic association, community development corporations, nonprofits, schools, religious organizations and businesses are all eligible.

Only not-for-profit organizations and groups with fiscal sponsors may collect the cash award. Applications are due by Aug. 19.

Friends of Pennypack announce two cleanup events

The Friends of Pennypack Park invite the public to take part in a park cleanup event and a movie night later this month.

The cleanup will be on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Pennypack on the Delaware from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The entrance is on State Road just south of Rhawn Street. Follow the signs for the Riverview Home for the Aged. Volunteers can use the event to fulfill community service obligations. Participants should wear long pants and comfortable but sturdy shoes or sneakers. Bug repellent and sunblock are recommended. The FOPP will provide tools, equipment and refreshments.

On Monday, Aug. 29, the FOPP will hold a public showing of Home, starting at dusk at the Pine Road picnic area. The entrance is on Pine Road just south of Bloomfield Avenue.

Comedy night event to be held Sept. 30

There will be a comedy show on Sept. 30 at Westaby Hall in Fairless Hills.

Tickets are $35 each and include dinner, dancing and the show. All proceeds will benefit ShopRite Partners In Caring, which helps fight hunger.
