Local veteran honored for service

A special salute: Northeast resident Thomas Day Sr. received the ‘Ambassadors for Peace’ award for his service in the Korean War.

Philadelphia veterans of the Korean War recently received the ‘Ambassadors for Peace’ award during a ceremony at St. Katherine of Siena.

Thomas Day Sr., a Northeast resident who served in the U.S. Army in Korea, was one of those honored during the ceremony.

He was also presented with a piece of the wire dividing North and South Korea. The commemorative sections of wire were packaged by the Republic of Korea, numbered so they know where on the wall it came from, and presented to special veterans for their service. They were made for the 50th anniversary of the division between North and South Korea. ••
