Volunteers collect tires, litter, debris at Fall Into Your Park cleanup

The Friends of Poquessing Watershed have discovered where Northeast Philadelphians most like to dump their used automobile tires illegally.

Last spring, FOPP volunteers pulled 134 tires from a wooded area near where McNulty Road intersects Black Lake Run and the Poquessing Creek Trail. When volunteers returned to the same spot on Nov. 12 for a Fall Into Your Park cleanup effort, they found 50½ more discarded tires.

In addition to those tires, workers removed 16 bags of litter and debris from the park on Nov. 12.

The volunteers included Roseann and Jessica Scheswohl, the Quitmeyer family, Jim Coffin, Rich Glaser, Vladimir Erkalov, Hans Brolinson, Jeanne Capone and Nance Kerns.

The trash haul also included four bags of recyclable cans, four warehouse skids, 12 wooden boards, four pieces of concrete, a carpet roll, a piece of iron, a chunk of wood, two vehicle axles, a car grill, an air dam, a car bumper, a lawn chair, a printer/copier machine and a port-a-potty seat.

The FOPP invites volunteers to return to the park on Saturday, Dec. 10, for the next cleanup event at Potter’s Field on the 12800 block of Dunks Ferry Road, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting. Students may fulfill their community service obligations by helping out, although those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
