Tacony civic to host Bags and Brawn Bingo

The Tacony Civic Association will host a Bags and Brawn Bingo fundraiser featuring designer pocketbooks and Milwaukee power tools on Saturday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the Tacony/Mayfair Sons of Italy, 4741 Friendship St. Additional parking is available at 7111 Vandike St.

The $36 ticket price includes beer, wine and soda. Players should bring their own snacks. Participants must declare whether they want to play for bags or tools upon arrival at the venue. For an extra $20, players can vie for both packages simultaneously.

Holy Redeemer to host Night at the Races

The Sisters of the Holy Redeemer will hold a Night at the Races to benefit their Food Pantry located on Townsend Road on Saturday, April 22, from 6 to 11 p.m. in St. Anselm Church Hall, 12670 Dunks Ferry Road.

Tickets cost $30 and include food, beer, soda and mixers for BYOB. Attendees must be 21 years of age.

Empty Plate Dinner event to help homeless

The Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network’s Empty Plate Dinner will hold an all-you-can-eat feast on Saturday, April 22, at St. Dominic’s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave., from 5 to 8 p.m. All proceeds will support neighbors dealing with temporary homelessness.

Tickets cost $20 via philashelter.org or $25 at the door ($10 for children 12 and under). Guests can purchase a beer and wine package for $10. The dinner will feature specialties from more than 70 restaurants. There will also be raffles, prizes and fun family activities. ••

Toastmasters Club will meet at PPH

Philadelphia’s First Toastmasters Club will meet on Thursday, April 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6500 Tabor Road.

Members learn to improve public speaking and leadership skills and develop effective communication skills. The cost is $5. Refreshments will be available.

Bingo dinner benefits cancer research

The Marlyn Fein Chapter of Fox Chase Cancer Center will hold a bingo dinner on Tuesday, April 25, at Brookside Manor, 50 Bustleton Pike, Feasterville.

The cost is $40, which includes a full-course dinner and bingo cards. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Classical guitarist to perform a recital

Classical guitarist Jordan Dodson will perform a recital on Monday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Old Pine Street Church, 412 Pine St. Admission is free.

Jazz show at Katharine Drexel Library

The Philadelphia Jazz Project will present Philly Celebrates Jazz at a local library as part of Jazz Appreciation Month.

Upcoming events at older adult center

Weight-loss session at Nazareth

Nazareth Hospital will host a free information session on bariatric surgery options and support services on Friday, April 21, at 8 a.m. in the Marian B Conference Room, 2601 Holme Ave.

Gala planned for St. Martin’s

St. Martin of Tours Independence Mission School will hold its Together Towards Tomorrow gala on Saturday, April 22, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Leonardo Helicopter, 3050 Red Lion Road. Tickets cost $75 and include hors d’oeuvres, two drink tickets, dinner and a silent auction.

The honorees will be John Parsons, of BSI Construction (Business Leader of the Year); Michael Korolishin, of Arcadia University (Alumnus of the Year); and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters of St. Martin’s (Educators of the Century).

The following nine nuns will be moving out in June following the closing of the convent: Sister Ellen Giardino, Sister Marie Jeannine Dawson, Sister Regina Flanigan, Sister Agnes Logan, Sister Marie Christine McKenna, Sister Marie St. James Nulty, Sister Susan Immaculate Platt, Sister Julia Ann Walsh and Sister Pat Wolfe. Holocaust survivor guest speaker

The Holme Circle Civic Association will commemorate Jewish History Month in April with a presentation by World War II Holocaust survivor and neighborhood resident Itka Zygmuntowicz at the association’s next general meeting on April 26 at 7 p.m. at St. Jerome’s School, Stamford and Colfax streets. All HCCA meetings are held in the school cafeteria/hall and are open to the public.

Zygmuntowicz, 91, is a native of Poland who was sent by the Nazis to the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in 1942 and separated from her family, whom she never saw again. In January 1945, she was moved to the Ravensbruck camp in Germany, where she survived for three more months before she was liberated by the Swedish Red Cross on Passover, April 26, 1945. Zygmuntowicz settled in Sweden, married and moved to the United States in 1953. She has been active in Philadelphia-area Jewish organizations and charities. ••

Easter commemoration is April 23

The Irish Easter Rising Memorial Committee invites the public to take part in its annual Easter commemoration at the graves of Irish patriots Joe McGarrity, Luke Dillon and Danny Cahalane on Sunday, April 23, at Holy Cross Cemetery, 626 Baily Road, Yeadon, followed by a performance by Irish musicians, The Shantys.

Participants will assemble at Holy Cross at 12:30, with the commemoration service to begin at 1 p.m. For information, contact Pat at 215–724–3992 or Frances at 610–446–1831.

A musical tribute featuring The Shantys and Irish dancers will follow the commemoration at the Oaks Ballroom, 511 W. Oak Lane, Glenolden. Admission costs $30 for adults or $10 for children under 12. Mammograms available

The Fox Chase Cancer Center/Flyers Wives Mobile Mammography Unit will be at the office of state Rep. Tom Murt (R-152nd dist.) on Friday, April 21, starting at 8 a.m. Murt’s district office is at 19 S. York Road in Hatboro.

Women who are interested in a mammography screening must be at least 40 years of age and have a prescription from their doctor to qualify. Health insurance will be accepted, but individuals who do not have health insurance still can qualify. Appointments are necessary. Call 215–728–3554. ••

Fundraiser to help Aid for Friends

A fundraising dinner for Aid for Friends will take place on Saturday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at the charity’s headquarters, 12271 Townsend Road. Cost is $15.

Proceeds will go toward purchase of a new van. Aid for Friends serves frail elderly and disabled shut-ins in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. The meals, visits and outreach services are always free. For tickets or information, call 215–464–2224. ••

Sky Zone to host grand-opening

Sky Zone Trampoline Park, 9490 Blue Grass Road, will host a grand-opening celebration on Sunday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sky Zone will offer giveaways and will hold charity raffles for jump time (a portion of all of the day’s proceeds will be donated to the Valley Youth House). There will be dance contests, family-friendly activities and an appearance by characters from Paw Patrol.

Ralph, from Q102, will serve as master of ceremonies from noon to 2 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. Participants from American Ninja Warrior and Ultimate Beastmaster, including Jessie “Flex” LeBreck, Tori Clement and Brian Redard, will provide clinics.

Silent auction at Bridesburg church

Emanuel United Church of Christ, 2628 Fillmore St., will hold a ticket-in-basket silent auction on Saturday, April 22.

Doors open at 11 a.m., and the drawings start at 12:30 p.m. Admission is $4 and includes $1 in tickets. Food and snacks will be available for purchase.

Nazareth hosts tribute to nuns

Peter Nocella’s choral work, Missa Brevis, will be reprised on Saturday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at Nazareth Academy’s chapel, 4001 Grant Ave.

The choral is a tribute to 11 nuns who sacrificed their lives to save a Polish town from Nazi annihilation during World War II. Admission is free. ••

Two workshops at Holy Family

Holy Family University, 9801 Frankford Ave., will host two upcoming workshops.

On Wednesday, April 19, Maintaining Family Emotional Wellness will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Education and Technology Center. The workshop is free. On Thursday, April 20, at the same time and site, a free Living Fully workshop will be offered.

Concert at Tiffany Diner
