The Historical Society of Tacony will meet on Monday, May 1, at 7 p.m. at Holy Innocents — St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 7001 Torresdale Ave.
The guest speaker will be archivist and historian Jack McCarthy. He will speak on In the Cradle of Industry and Liberty, the title of his new book.
McCarthy will trace the history of Philadelphia manufacturing from the small shops of the colonial craftsmen to the massive industrial plants of the 19th and 20th centuries. He will also address the dramatic downsizing in manufacturing, beginning in the mid-20th century, and the city’s recent transition to a post-industrial, service-based economy.
McCarthy will sign copies of his book. Light refreshments will be served. ••
