A 16-year-old motorcyclist died after he ran a red light and crashed into a sport-utility vehicle in Lawndale on Tuesday night, police said.

Carmelo Mangual was traveling eastbound on Devereaux Avenue aboard a 2007 Kawasaki at about 10:17 p.m. when he disregarded a steady red signal and collided with a 2013 Infiniti, police said. The driver of the SUV swerved to avoid the crash, but couldn’t avoid the motorcycle, which was traveling at “a high rate of speed.”

Mangual, of the 6200 block of Lawndale Avenue, was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the sidewalk. A witness tried to render first aid until paramedics arrived and took Mangual to Albert Einstein Medical Center with undisclosed injuries. He died that evening.

No other injuries were reported. ••
