In response to Mark Tretter’s Letter to the Editor, “Speak English in the USA,” published in the Northeast Times on March 29:
In response to Mr. Tretter from Somerton: You asked why the illegal immigrants are coming here. They get medical, dental, food, a place to live, an interpreter and Social Security.
Just a few things for you to digest.
Your grandmom was right. You became an American. My mother came here in 1928. She had to repay her sponsor $200. She worked for wealthy people and made $6 a week. She had to learn English to survive.
So if you come here to work and contribute to our society, welcome. And if not, you may want to stay home.
