Organized by the Friends of Pennypack Park, the cleanup yielded 35 bags of trash and recyclable cans in the park’s Sandy Run section
Eighteen volunteers contributed a combined 50 hours of labor to remove litter and other debris from a section of Pennypack Park on May 27.
Organized by the Friends of Pennypack Park, the cleanup yielded 35 bags of trash and recyclable cans in the park’s Sandy Run section along Lexington and Sandyford avenues from Roosevelt Boulevard to the rear of Austin Meehan Middle School.
In addition to the bagged litter, volunteers removed numerous large, reusable or unusual items that had been discarded in the park including a milk crate, three tarps, a residential garbage can and lid, two grill racks, a long-handled dust pan, a television, a laptop computer, a wedding photo, a padlock, a cat bed, two dead Christmas trees, a book bag, two sweaters, two pairs of sneakers, a hoodie, two inflatable snow disks, a snow sled, various sports balls, a hubcap, a rusted set of keys, wood planks from a broken fence and a claw hammer.
The volunteers included Rich Glaser, Alan Kaminsky, Dave and Gloria El, Dean Lynd, Rev. Terri McNamara from St. Luke’s United Church, Marian Rossi, Edna Lantinelli, Kenneth Larson, Robert McMunn, Roland Williams, Thomas Henry, Karen Kaczorek, Jason Trenchard, Audrey Walmsley, Joyce Ferrero, Kevin Sweetra and Nance Kerns. Park Rangers Monica Hicks, Gina Moye and Nick Gonzalez also helped the effort.
The FOPP’s next monthly cleanup will be on Saturday, June 24. Volunteers will meet at Welsh Road and Cresco Avenue at 10 a.m. The public is welcome to take part. Participation may count toward community service obligations. The FOPP will supply tools, gloves, refreshments and snacks. Volunteers should wear long pants and sleeves, as well as shoes appropriate for hiking. Bug repellent and sunscreen are recommended. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
