A high-speed Amtrak Acela train struck and killed a woman who had wandered onto the tracks at Holmesburg Station on Friday afternoon.
Amtrak reported train 2155 was traveling southbound between Metropark, N.J., and 30th Street Station at about 12:10 p.m. when the train struck the woman. There were 161 passengers on board, but no injuries reported.
As Amtrak police investigated the scene, passengers were transferred to a different southbound train to continue their journey. The 2155 is an express service between New York and Washington with five stops between.
Amtrak did not identify the victim, who was described by Philadelphia police as a white female. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
Amtrak and commuter train service was halted briefly and restricted throughout Friday afternoon as the city’s medical examiner and other investigators processed the scene. ••
