Edward Schoffler has been named Officer of the Month for disarming a suicidal man with a knife.
Police Officer Edward Schoffler has been named Officer of the Month in the 8th district for disarming a suicidal man who had stabbed himself and threatened police with a weapon.
The 8th Police District Advisory Committee recognized Schoffler with a plaque presentation during its Aug. 3 meeting.
The district did not disclose the date or location of the incident. But it happened after Schoffler responded to an emergency report of a suicidal male armed with a knife. When Schoffler arrived at the scene, the man ran out of a house with his arm extended as if he had a weapon. Schoffler ordered him to stop, but the man kept running toward police.
Schoffler used his Taser twice on the man, but the device appeared to have no effect on him. Schoffler then charged the man and knocked him to the ground as the man approached another officer.
Police provided no further information about the outcome of the incident. Aides to state Reps. Martina White and Ed Neilson, along with City Councilman Brian O’Neill, took part in the award ceremony with PDAC officials. ••
