City Councilman Al Taubenberger last week presented a citation to Schenk’s Family Bakery, which is in its 80th year of operation.

Taubenberger (R-at large) visited Schenk’s, 7951 Verree Road (at Ripley Street) in Fox Chase, on Aug. 17. He presented the citation to owner Steven Schenk.

Steven’s grandparents, John and Pauline Schenk, were bakers in Germany before coming to the United States and opening a shop in 1938 at Wayne Avenue and Clapier Street in Germantown.

The shop relocated to 5th Street and Nedro Avenue in Olney in 1969, and remained open until the 1990s. Another Schenk’s was open in Warminster from 1987–92.

Steven Schenk and his wife, Christine, moved the business to Fox Chase in 1992.

“They make very tasty cakes. Everything is very, very delicious,” Taubenberger said.

Schenk’s donates its tasty confections to the Fraternal Order of Police, St. Cecilia Church and School, Fox-Rok A.A., block parties and the Breathing Room Foundation, which provides care and support to local families affected by cancer.

Schenk’s, which sells all-occasion cakes, pastries, cookies, doughnuts and cupcakes, is open Tuesdays through Sundays.

“The community is very supportive,” Steven Schenk said. ••
