Community Day on Sept. 16

State Sen. Tina Tartaglione will join the 2nd Police District and the 2nd Police District Advisory Council in sponsoring a community day on Saturday, Sept. 16. The day will kick off with a bicycle ride at 9 a.m. Activities will continue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fox Chase Elementary School, 500 Rhawn St.

There will be a flea market, children’s fingerprinting, bicycle registration, vehicle identification number etching and document shredding.

Information tables will feature elected officials and representatives of the Philadelphia Police Department, Philadelphia Fire Department and local and state agencies. ••

Nutrition program Monday at KleinLife

The Northeast Naturally Occurring Retirement Community will welcome City Councilman Al Taubenberger, Fox Chase Farm and the 4-H club for a nutrition program on Monday, Sept. 18, at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., room 217.

Check-in is at 11:30 a.m., lunch is served at noon and the program is at 12:30 p.m. A recommended donation of $1 is requested for those eating lunch. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the NORC office at 215–320–0351. ••

SEPTA photos available at Taylor’s office

The district office of state Rep. John Taylor (R-177th dist.) will take SEPTA photos every Wednesday in September from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The office is located at 4117 Longshore Ave.

Individuals 65 and older can register for the new SEPTA Key Senior ID Card.

John Birch Society to meet Tuesday

The John Birch Society will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, Rhawn and Ditman streets.

There will be a video, The Constitution is the Solution.

The motto of the John Birch Society is “Less Government, More Responsibility and — With God’s Help — A Better World.” Future meetings will be on Oct. 17, Nov. 21, Dec. 19, Jan. 16 and Feb. 20. ••

Frankford High School class of ’77 reunion

The deadline is Sept. 15 to buy tickets for the Frankford High School class of 1977’s 40th-year reunion. The reunion will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Ashburner Inn, Torresdale Avenue and Ashburner Street in Holmesburg. The cost is $22. There will be a cash bar.

Book fair at WEL Burholme is Saturday

Apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima anniversary

The public is invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima at a Fatima Holy Hour for World Peace on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at St. Bartholomew Church, 5560 Harbison Avenue.

The evening will include adoration, recitation of the rosary and procession of the Fatima statue.

Guests can bring a flower to honor Our Lady. ••

Immanuel Lutheran to celebrate anniversary

Immanuel Lutheran Church, 14100 Worthington Road in Somerton, will be celebrating its 225th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 17.

The church invites the community to a 10 a.m. service that will be in English and German. Bishop Claire Burkat will officiate. A reception will be held following the service in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

Free smoking cessation classes offered

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will offer smoking and tobacco cessation classes on upcoming Wednesdays.

The first series will take place from Sept. 13 to Oct. 25. The second series will take place from Nov. 1 to Dec. 13. Classes will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the first-floor cancer team conference room. Registration is required. Call 215-335-7727. ••

John J. Nesbitt to host reunion

There will be a 45th reunion for former employees of John J. Nesbitt, a large commercial heating and air conditioning company that was located at State Road and Rhawn Street, on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at Tiffany Diner, 9010 Roosevelt Blvd.

The cost for dinner is $20.

Chorale looking for singers

The Greater Philadelphia Chorale is seeking new members for the 2017–2018 season.

The first session of the new season will be on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at the St. Jerome school hall music room. All singers are welcome. Golf outing to fight addiction

Angels in Motion will sponsor Swing at Addiction, its first golf outing, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m. at John F. Byrne Golf Club, 9550 Leon St. in Torresdale. The cost is $95 per golfer. Sponsorships start at $100. Non-golfers can pay $25 for dinner.

Older Adult Center happenings

The Northeast Older Adult Center, 8101 Bustleton Ave. in Rhawnhurst, will host a couple of upcoming events on Friday nights.

On Sept. 15, the City Rhythm Orchestra will be in concert in the parking lot from 7 to 9 p.m.

A Spanish heritage dance is set for Sept. 22, from 7 to 10 p.m. Trio Renacer will perform. The cost is $6. ••

Passport day on Saturday

Individuals can apply for or renew a passport on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Philadelphia Passport Agency, U.S. Custom House, 200 Chestnut St. The event is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Passport Awareness Month.

Theater show this weekend

Children’s running program

Holy Redeemer Health System is sponsoring the inaugural Healthy Kids Running Series.

The five-week program is open to children ages 2 to 13. The program begins on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. at the Holy Redeemer Transformation Center, 521 Moredon Road, Huntingdon Valley.

Each week, participants run courses ranging from a 50-yard dash to one mile and collect points for completed distances. At the conclusion of the series, the boy and girl with the most points in their respective age division will receive a trophy.

Luncheon for Kensington grads

The annual Kensington High School Alumni Association luncheon is set for Saturday, Oct. 21, at 11:30 a.m. at the Radisson hotel, 2400 Old Lincoln Highway in Trevose. Bowling fundraiser is Saturday

Philadelphia Police Officer Sammy Sanchez’ annual Bowling 4 iPads fundraiser to benefit local schoolchildren with autism will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Thunderbird Lanes, 3075 Holme Ave.

The $35 ticket includes three hours of bowling, show rental, food and music. Additional funds will be raised through raffles and silent auctions. This is a BYOB event.

Clothing drive scheduled for Saturday

The Marlyn Fein Chapter, Board of Associates, Fox Chase Cancer Center, is running a clothing drive on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The location is 510 Township Line Road (before the intersection of Laurel Avenue and Church Road) in Cheltenham.

Items accepted include gently worn clothes, accessories, books and small trinkets placed in bags or boxed.

The event helps support cancer research and compassionate patient care. ••

High school fair on Friday and Saturday

GreatPhillySchools.org will sponsor the Philly High School Fair on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15–16, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (Hall B).

Hours are 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

More than 12,000 people attended last year’s fair. Students will meet with representatives from more than 100 district, magnet, private and charter high schools and learn how to apply.

GreatPhillySchools.org has updated school ratings, a new “user guide” section and a new administration feature that allows school staff to update or add missing information to their school profile. The website is also available in Spanish.

GreatPhillySchools.org presents ratings and information to help Philadelphia families and students search and compare more than 400 district, charter and private schools. Families can also find information about school culture, extracurricular activities, special programs and upcoming application deadlines. Print guides are available at recreation centers and Free Library branches.

AIDS group holding block party

Philly AIDS Thrift will hold a block party on Saturday, Sept. 16, from noon to 6 p.m. on the 700 blocks of S. 5th St. and E. Passyunk Ave. (between Bainbridge Street and Monroe Street).

The event will feature balloonists, face painters, a Halloween parade, food trucks, artist/craft vendors, area businesses and appearances by WXPN DJ Robert Drake, the West Philadelphia Orchestra, a sword-swallowing and fire-breathing clown and state Rep. Brian Sims in the celebrity dunk tank. ••

Murt to host meeting Thursday on suicide

State Rep. Tom Murt (R-152nd dist.) will hold a meeting to discuss how stress affects teenagers, symptoms of depression, what is considered a crisis and the warning signs of suicide.

The meeting is on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hatboro Community Church, 730 Preston Lane in Hatboro.

Topics will also include bullying and how bullying leads to stress and anxiety.

“We must do everything we can to stem the tide of depression and suicide among our children,” Murt said. “This event will give parents the tools to recognize the telltale signs and find a path to help.”

The presentation will be geared to both parents and students and will be run by Sheila Gillin and Melissa Hopely Rice, of Minding Your Mind.

Produce market Wednesdays at RSVP

RSVP Philadelphia at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., has teamed with Greensgrow Mobile Markets to operate a fresh produce farmers market every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon.

The public is invited to shop at the market through mid-October.

Proceeds from the food sales are going to Greensgrow Mobile Markets, a nonprofit organization that develops urban agriculture projects.
