Learn more about health care program
Orleans Technical College, 2770 Red Lion Road, the career training school operated by JEVS Human Services, will hold an information session on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. for its new health care training program. Classes start on Oct. 16.
The school’s first training program in the healthcare field was developed in response to a growing workplace need. Orleans will train students to become patient services representatives, an entry-level position in hospitals, doctors’ offices and medical facilities.
Orleans Tech will employ classroom education, on-the-job experience, partnerships with employers and a start-to-finish student support system with job-search assistance.
Students can complete the course in six months, earning a career diploma plus 25.5 college credits.

Dedication ceremony to be held at Burholme Park Playground
The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the renovation and redesign of Burholme Park Playground, Cottman and Central avenues, on Thursday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m.
The $639,000 project was coordinated by City Councilman Brian O’Neill and the city Departments of Public Property and Parks and Recreation.
Renovations include new play structures, safety matting and retrofitted additions to existing structures. Features include picnic tables and benches positioned around the play areas with new paving. An Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible walkway was created, spanning the play areas for 2- to-5-year-olds and 5- to 12-year-olds. The parking lot was renovated, and lighting, with sonic devices, was added for security. ••
Boxing card at Katie O’Donnell’s
The Jack Costello Boxing Club is sanctioning boxing matches on Saturday, Sept. 30, starting at 2 p.m. at Katie O’Donnell’s Irish Pub, 4501 Woodhaven Road.

Yom Kippur services will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 30, beginning at 9 a.m. Yiskor services on Yom Kippur will be held at 11:30 a.m., noon and 12:30 p.m. Evening services are scheduled for 5:15 p.m., and after yontif ends at 7:29 p.m., there will be a Havdalah service at 7:30 p.m.

Children’s heart disease benefit on Sept. 30
There will be a Keep the Beat benefit on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 10 p.m. at St. Dominic’s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave. in Holmesburg, to benefit The Children’s Heart Foundation’s mission to save babies’ lives through congenital heart disease research.
Tickets include a dinner buffet, dessert table, beer, wine, soda, juice, swag bag, caricature and DJ.
The event will also include more than 100 raffles and a wine pull. Tickets are $40 each, $185 for a table of five and $350 for a table of 10. Sponsorships are available.

Bark for Life dog event on Sept. 30
The American Cancer Society will sponsor Bark For Life on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Neshaminy State Park, on State Road in Bensalem.

Dawkins promoting health fair on Saturday

Fitzgerald holding shredding event
State Rep. Isabella Fitzgerald (D-203rd dist.) will hold a shredding event to destroy unwanted confidential documents on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at West Oak Lane Charter School, 7115 Stenton Ave.

Crusader Classic on Sunday
The 15th Crusader Classic 5K Run to benefit the Fire Lt. Robert Neary Scholarship Fund will be held on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m., rain or shine.
The goal is to raise $10,000. Funds raised by the Crusader Classic 5K Run are used to provide partial scholarships to deserving students who may otherwise be unable to attend Father Judge.
Race-day registration will be held in the Father Judge parking lot beginning at 7:30 a.m. Entry fees are $30 for adults and $15 for students. This year, $5 of each adult entry will go to the Homes for Troops.

Fundraiser will benefit Gift of Life
The St. Hubert and Little Flower high school volleyball teams will hold a fundraiser at their game on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m.
The fundraiser will benefit Gift of Life, a nonprofit that coordinates life-saving transplants. The event is to help Kevin Brighter, who is in need of a kidney transplant. T-shirts and other fundraising activities will be at the event.

Fox Chase Soccer fighting cancer
The first Fox Chase Soccer Fight vs. Cancer Campaign will take place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 29. The campaign is an extension of the club’s prior three-year Breast Cancer Awareness Week, which raised close to $15,000 for Fox Chase Cancer Center. This year’s campaign will take place each weekend from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fox Chase Soccer travel teams will be raising money on the fields and at the concession stand, as well as selling campaign T-shirts and taking donations. During the month, various weekends will be dedicated to raising awareness about a specific cancer. The Fox Chase fields will be highlighted in the color dedicated to that cause.

Sabatina’s senior expo on Oct. 6
Local senior citizens are invited to attend state Sen. John Sabatina Jr.’s annual senior expo, which takes place on Friday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory, 2700 Southampton Road (at Roosevelt Boulevard).

St. Jerome seniors taking a trip
The St. Jerome senior citizens club will be taking a trip to Pine Creek Gorge, sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.

Holy Family University named Military Friendly
Holy Family University has been named a 2017 Military Friendly School by Victory Media.
Each year, the list of Military Friendly Schools is provided to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.
Holy Family University offers a Veterans’ Affairs Programs.
More than 1,700 schools participated in the 2017 survey, with 1,273 awarded with the designation.
