Police officers address Lawncrest Community Association

The Sept. 19 meeting provided many updates about the area.

Members of the Lawncrest Community Association last week heard from 2nd Police District Lt. John Barker and community relations officer Mark Mroz.

In other news from the Sept. 19 meeting, residents learned that the property at 5717 Rising Sun Ave. will become a seafood restaurant. The site is the former home of K Diner, Millie’s Luv Inn and the Crest Diner.

City Councilwoman Cherelle Parker has introduced a bill that could lead to the installation of a red light camera and/or left-turn signals at Rising Sun Avenue and Levick Street.

Meanwhile, Parker will hold a property tax and deed workshop series on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Jardel Recreation Center, 1400 Cottman Ave.

Bethany United Church of Christ, 6545 Rising Sun Ave., will host a free community breakfast and winter coat/jacket giveaway on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 to 11 a.m. at its fellowship hall.

The Philadelphia Protestant Home Auxiliary is sponsoring a pork and sauerkraut dinner and bake table on Thursday, Oct. 12. The cost is $12.50. Doors open at 4 p.m. PPH is at 6500 Tabor Ave.

State Rep. Jared Solomon is sponsoring a public safety and criminal justice summit on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church, 1009 Unruh Ave. Among those scheduled to appear are Police Commissioner Richard Ross and John Wetzel, secretary of the state Department of Corrections.

Solomon will co-host an Oct. 27 appearance by the Pennsylvania Ballet at Northeast High School. Admission is free. The performance will begin at 7 p.m.

The Navy Supply Corps Foundation is organizing a craft fair and flea market on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Naval Support Activity Base, 700 Robbins Ave. The rain date is Nov. 4. Vendors can call 267–736–7643 or email navycraftfair@gmail.com

The Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at St. William parish hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. The LCA will be joined by members of the Lawncrest 4th of July Committee. Pizza will be served. ••
