Events at Gospel Light Baptist

Gospel Light Baptist Church, 3541 Avalon St. is hosting two upcoming events.

An Ice Cream Sunday celebration will be held on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. at the church. Ice Cream Sunday will start immediately after the Sunday service. There will be free ice cream and games for the children. All are welcome to join. Participants can meet Pastor Philip Wood and the Gospel Light congregation.

On Sunday, Oct. 29, Gospel Light Baptist Church is sponsoring a Harvest Celebration feast for the community. This event will be held at 1 p.m. at the church. All are welcome to join church service starting at 1 p.m. The Harvest Celebration will follow directly after the service. There will be free hot dogs and hamburgers, games and pony rides for children.

PPA meeting in Mayfair

The Philadelphia Parking Authority will hold a community meeting on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Mayfair Community Center, 2990 St. Vincent St.

Guests will learn about residential permit parking, how to avoid a parking ticket, red light cameras, how to enroll in a payment plan, signs for disabled people, the status of unpaid parking tickets, abandoned vehicles, auctions, contractor placards, employment opportunities and passenger and valet loading zones. ••

Comedy night fundraiser

Pub 36, 7681 Frankford Ave., will host a comedy show on Friday, Oct. 20.

Tickets cost $15. There will be a cash bar, and dinner will be available for purchase before the show. A portion of each ticket sold will be donated to the Philadelphia firefighters union’s widows fund. Doors open at 7 p.m. Showtime is at 8:30. The show will feature The Legendary Wid, Ed McGonigal and John Kensil.

Living history tour at All Saints

All Saints’ Torresdale Episcopal Church’s history committee will present a living history tour, “Unfortunate Circumstances,” on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Tour times will be 3:30 and 5 p.m. The church and cemetery are at 9601 Frankford Ave. Members of the history committee will bring the dead to life as they tell their unfortunate stories. Tickets are $5. Proceeds benefit the historic preservation project in the graveyard.

An all-you-can-eat soup dinner will be available from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the soup dinner are $5. A ticket for the tour and soup dinner is $8.

Driver safety program available

AARP will present its 90-minute Smart DriveTEK driver safety program at two locations on Tuesday, Oct. 24. The programs will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, 9768 Verree Road, and Aria Hospital-Torresdale Campus, Red Lion and Knights roads.

AARP offers the program due to the many new safety features. The cost is $5. Participants can register at aarp.org/PAdriverTEK or 1–877–805–0458. ••

Panel to discuss addiction

Livengrin will sponsor Understanding the Levels of Care on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bucks County Technical High School, 610 Wistar Road in Fairless Hills. A panel will discuss the terminology and jargon of drug addiction and levels of care. There will also be personal stories of recovery. Resource tables from local service providers, volunteer fellowships and nonprofit organizations will be available to provide information about services. The event is free. Film on racism to be shown

Hiway Theater, 212 York Road in Jenkintown, will show the film I’m Not a Racist…Am I? on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10.

Abington Friends School is among the sponsors of the screening. After the screening, producer Andre Robert Lee will moderate a community conversation.

The film follows a dozen New York public and private school students who meet as a group over the course of a year and talk about their evolving definitions of racism.

Open house at BVM

Maternity BVM Elementary School, 9322 Old Bustleton Ave., will host an open house on Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m.

There will be student-led tours, financial aid information, hands-on school activities and a look at the new media and student video center. Visitors will have a chance to meet the teachers, Home and School Association representatives and CYO coaches. Registration will be taken for the 2018–19 school year.

Small biz conference at CCP

Community College of Philadelphia’s Northeast Regional Center, 12901 Townsend Road, will host its seventh annual Small Business Conference on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be seminars on business planning; the essential elements of sales; a five-step strategy to marketing; email marketing strategies; financial matters; and maintaining a competitive edge. Series on Jews on TV

Rabbi Dan Wolpe will conduct a class on how Jews have been portrayed in television at Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, 9768 Verree Road in Bustleton.

Wolpe will present television series from different eras and discuss whether Jews have been portrayed positively or stereotypically over time.

The class will meet on the following Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon: Oct. 25, Nov. 8, Nov. 15, Nov. 29 and Dec. 6. The cost is $15 for all five classes and includes popcorn. ••

Franklin Towne holding Designer Bag Bingo

Franklin Towne Charter High School will be sponsoring a Designer Bag Bingo on Friday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road.

Local synagogue taking trips

The Sisterhood of Shaare Shamayim will travel to Tyler State Park, Route 413 and Swamp Road in Newtown, on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. for a Havdalah ceremony under the stars.

High-powered telescopes will be on site to pick out the first three stars that mark the end of Shabbat.

The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children. Smores will be served.

On Sunday, Nov. 12, the Sisterhood will see the play Fast Girls at Old Academy Players, 3544 Indian Queen Lane. A carpool will leave the synagogue at 12:30 p.m. for a 2 o’clock show. The cost is $18.

Upcoming arts shows in the Northeast

The Multicultural Arts Exchange will present four upcoming shows.

Philadelphia International Music Festival prodigies will perform on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. at Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack, 8401 Roosevelt Blvd.

Pianist/storyteller Martin Soderberg will perform on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 5 p.m. at Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, 9768 Verree Road.

International concert pianist Lance Wiseman and Israeli violinist Alexander Spivak will entertain on Friday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at WEL Pennypack.

Pianist/storyteller Alexander Borisov, soprano Hanna Golodinskii and pianist Vyacheslav Gryaznov will be in concert on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. at Shaare Shamayim.

Mosaics art class offered at KleinLife

KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., is offering a new five-week mosaics art class for active and maturing adults beginning on Monday, Oct. 23, from 12:45 to 2 p.m.

The public is invited to participate along with members. The classes will run on five successive Mondays.

The class is open to everyone from those with no previous art experience working with mosaics to those who are totally familiar with the art form. Cost for the series, including materials, is $25.

Fall festival at 8th Police District

The 8th Police District Advisory Council will sponsor a fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 21, from noon to 4 p.m. at the 8th Police District, 3100 Red Lion Road.

There will be games, music, raffles, food and a haunted house. ••

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, in partnership with the Fairmount Park Conservancy and TD Bank, announced that the Somerton Civic Association and MaST Community Charter School will receive a Community Yard Tree Giveaway Grant.

The grant is worth 50 trees and $500.

Series on addiction to be held at Cranaleith

Cranaleith Spiritual Center, 13475 Proctor Road, will host a three-week series on addiction within the context of the Christian community. The program is co-sponsored by St. Christopher Parish.

We Thirst: Lessons in Mercy — Christian Reflections on Addiction will take place at Cranaleith on Wednesdays, Oct. 18 and 25 and Nov. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $15 per session, $45 for the series or $50 for a family for the series.

The program will be led by Nina Marie Corona, an expert in spirituality and addiction. Participants will include the afflicted, their adult family members and friends, counselors, nurses, chaplains, social workers, priests, deacons, those in the criminal justice system, first responders and educators.

Continuing education credits are available for social workers and chaplains.

Fundraiser to be held for homeless dogs

Sprinkler Fitters Union Hall, 14002 McNulty Road, will host a fundraiser for homeless and medical-need dogs on Friday, Oct. 27, from 7 to 11 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit J & Co. Dog Rescue and Providence Animal Center.

The event will include food, drinks, music, raffles and a 50/50. Tickets cost $40.

Opioid presentation at Holme Circle Civic

All are welcome to attend the next Holme Circle Civic Association meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at St. Jerome school hall, Colfax and Stamford streets.

Prevention Point Philadelphia will present an opioid crisis training class. Topics will include the history of drugs, statistics and overdose prevention.

Attendees will be trained how to recognize signs of an overdose and how to personally administer Naloxone (Narcan).

Orders to obtain the Narcan nasal spray from Circle Pharmacy, 2853 Holme Ave., will be distributed after the training session. ••
