Residents write about Alzheimer’s awareness, gun control and how to donate to veterans in need in this week’s letters to the editor.
‘The fight of his life’
He’s In The Fight Of His Life, in recognition of November being Alzheimer’s Awareness Month:
He’s in the fight of his life.
His memory’s not the same.
She prays he’ll be alright.
He doesn’t know he’s changed.
They’ve been married 50 years.
She’s loved him all that time.
He doesn’t know her name.
She breaks down and cries.
She can’t even find the words,
to express how hard it is.
He just remembers less and less,
and repeats himself constantly.
He’s in the fight of his life.
Her face can’t hide the pain.
He’s never out of her sight.
She’s never once complained.
She’s heard of others just like him.
It brings no comfort, only fear.
They say, “That many will outlive,
the one who’s in their care.”
But the one thing she knows for sure, through her faith, she’ll find the strength,
to wait till the day he finds his heart
and has him back again.
But until that time comes,
she’ll try the best she can.
He’ll always be the only one.
She’d never break that promise to him.
He’s in the fight of his life.
She swears she won’t give up.
Deep down she knows there’s
little hope, but she still does….
And she’s still in love.

Ban automatic weapons
I am so sad to hear about another mass killing, this one at the church in Texas. I learned how to safely handle and fire a .22-caliber rifle while attending a week at Boy Scout camp three years in a row and in the U.S. Army, but never did or will I own a firearm.
I cannot believe that the NRA will give its spin on gun control and the rights we have to bear arms under the Second Amendment. We should enforce this amendment with the technology that was in existence in December 1792. A pistol or a rifle could at best be fired and reloaded about three times a minute. Philadelphia should be able to enforce stricter gun laws. I firmly believe that only our well-trained law enforcement should be able to possess automatic guns. I believe hunters using shotguns are limited to only four shells
