Two Northeast Philly tough guys scored big wins this past weekend.
It was a great weekend for tough guys with Northeast Philadelphia ties when Joey Dawejko emerged victorious in a boxing match in Philadelphia, while Eddie Alvarez scored a knockout in a UFC war. And in both cases, the Philly boys defeated previously unbeaten foes.
Dawejko won a decision over Kelvin Nunez to bring home the vacant WBC FECARBOX World Title at SugarHouse Casino. Dawejko scored the win via decision. The fight was highlighted by a knockdown in the seventh round.
With the win on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd, the champ improved to 19–4.
On Saturday night, Alvarez returned to his winning ways in violent fashion when his knee knocked out Justin Gaethje in the undercard of UFC 218. The bout was selected as the fight of the night during the card.
Alvarez delivered body shots to Gaethje, who came into the fight a perfect 18–0, and scored the knockout with a viscous knee to the face.
With the victory, Alvarez improved to 29–5 in his MMA career, 5–2 in the UFC and secured his spot as the unofficial “most violent fighter” in the sport, a title both he and Gaethje were fighting for in the match. ••
