8-year-old killed in Crescentville accident

A boy was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Crescentville Wednesday. Police arrested a 34-year-old man who crashed into the car and attempted to flee.

An 8-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run incident that happened on the 5500 block of Whitaker Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

Police arrested 34-year-old Michael Finn of the 5900 block of Frontenac Street after he tried to escape the scene. He is facing charges of accident involving death, homicide by vehicle, accident-death no license and involuntary manslaughter.

Police say that at approximately 1:40 p.m. a 1989 Honda Civic with the 8-year-old boy was making a left turn when Finn’s 1996 Honda Odyssey collided with the passenger side, making that vehicle lose control. According to witnesses, Finn’s vehicle had been traveling down Whitaker at a high speed and was swerving between lanes.

Witnesses say after the collision, Finn exited his vehicle and inspected the damage before getting back in and striking a parked vehicle as he attempted to escape.

Police were able to stop the vehicle and witnesses identified Finn at the intersection of Frontenac and Venango streets.

The 8-year-old boy was transported to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and was pronounced dead at 2:19 p.m. The driver of the vehicle was also transported to the hospital for unknown injuries.

Finn was arrested Thursday. ••
