Burholme Civic agrees to 2 zoning proposals

The Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association last week approved two zoning proposals at its monthly meeting.

The group had not met since January, canceling its February meeting because it fell on the same day as the Eagles Super Bowl victory parade.

Members approved legalization of an existing two-family dwelling at 1244 Cottman Ave., between Claridge Street and Montour Street.

Members also backed, pending a visit to the immediate neighbors, legalization of Elegant Events, a wedding and event designer business that has been at 7300 Shelbourne St. for almost six years. The owner said she has not made any changes to the property, other than replacing a sign that promoted Josie’s Hair Salon, the previous business. Elegant Events has three off-street parking spots and takes clients by appointment only. Go to elegant-events.net

In other news from the March 8 meeting:

• Mark Mroz, community relations officer in the 2nd Police District, said the crowd that gathered at the Five Points intersection of Cottman, Oxford and Rising Sun avenues after the Eagles won the Super Bowl behaved in an orderly fashion. Some 75 police officers were on the scene, and they roped off the World War I memorial.

Mroz also mentioned that a 68-year-old woman living in an apartment on the 7100 block of Oxford Ave. was stabbed to death. An ex-boyfriend, who lived in a Center City homeless shelter, has been charged in the crime.

Mroz also discussed the arrest of a Fels High School student who stole a gun out of a car, then carried it into school in his backpack. The gun was discovered as the student went through a metal detector. Mroz believes backpacks carried by students should be required to be clear so authorities have a better chance of finding guns.
