Junior Night for Father Judge, St. Hubert

The guidance departments of Father Judge and St. Hubert high schools will hold a Junior Night on Wednesday, April 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the auditorium at Judge, 3301 Solly Ave.

A panel of college admissions officers will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. Anyone is welcome, but all 11th-grade students and their parents are encouraged to attend.

There will be guest speakers from La Salle University, Holy Family and Community College of Philadelphia discussing the application and admission process. ••

Meatball contest to be held in Tacony

The Order of the Sons of Italy of America Tacony Mayfair Lodge 447, 4741 Friendship St., will host a meatball contest on Sunday, April 8.

The cooking entry is $15. The cost is $20 to be on the judging panel. Both include a free dinner.

Competitors must bring at least 15 hot meatballs at 3 p.m. They should be in a 9×11 aluminum pan, with or without gravy.

Judging begins at 3:30. Meatballs will be judged on texture, appearance, taste and overall. Winners will be recognized with their names on a trophy and gift certificates to Lorenzo’s Cafe.

At 4 p.m., there will be a spaghetti, meatballs, salad and bread dinner for $5.

Financial event at Tartaglione’s office

State Sen. Christine Tartaglione invites the community to visit her Bridge Street district office on Tuesday, April 10, to take advantage of a free Financial Freedom for Working Families event.

The senator will partner with State Treasurer Joe Torsella and the Campaign for Working Families Inc. to “Show YOU the Money!”

There will be free income tax return preparation available, along with unclaimed property search, rent and property tax rebate application preparation and Earned Income Tax Credit assistance. Visitors can also open a PA 529 College Savings Plan with a waiver of the usual $50 enrollment fee. The event will occur at 1061 Bridge St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Brain cancer fundraiser at Cannstatter

The Gray Matt’ers Brain Tumor Society will hold its third annual beef-and-beer fundraiser on Saturday, April 7, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road. Tickets cost $35 in advance and $40 at the door. The evening will include a 50/50, silent auction, door prizes and DJ Mark Mroz. Go to gmbts.org ••

Holmesburg CDC happy hour on April 6

The Holmesburg Community Development Corporation will hold an extended happy hour on Friday, April 6, from 6 to 10 p.m. at SawTown Tavern, 4717 Princeton Ave.

Historian and filmmaker Jason Sherman will host Historic Northeast Philadelphia Trivia. The evening will feature drink specials and a preview of SawTown’s new menu items. The party will continue when DJ Justin kicks off karaoke at 10 p.m.

Designer Purse Bingo at St. Dom’s

Aid For Friends will sponsor Designer Purse Bingo on Sunday, April 8, at St. Dominic’s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave.

The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. and is open to people 21 and older. Doors open at noon.

The cost is $30 in advance and $35 at the door, and includes 12 games, beer wall and mystery box raffles, gift baskets, snacks, beer, wine, soda, coffee and tea.

Sports Hall of Fame banquet at Cannstatter

The City All-Star Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 27th annual induction ceremony on Tuesday, April 10, at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road.

The inductees are Mike Borski, Gil Brooks, Bill Edger, Annie Bobiak Kroes, Jeff Maconaghy, Jack Maley, Jameel McClain, Mike McCloskey, Mickey McGroarty, Ralph Ricapito, Mark Singer and Bill Travers.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 7. Tickets cost $50, or $500 for a table of 10.

Comedy dinner theater at Loudenslager

John Loudenslager American Legion Post №366, 7976–78 Oxford Ave., will host a comedy dinner theater on Sunday, April 8. Reservations are required.

Food sampling for charity on Saturday

Feast of Justice will hold its annual A Taste of Hope fundraiser at St. Dominic’s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave., on Saturday, April 7, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Grief support group meeting Thursday

Donna Glatz, widow of slain Lawncrest jeweler William Glatz, will hold Heal Your Heart From Loss on Thursday, April. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the James E. Kinney Senior Center, 165 Township Road in Richboro.

Glatz will share the story of her husband’s murder. William Glatz was shot to death in 2010 during a robbery attempt inside his jewelry store on Rising Sun Avenue. Obina Onyiah was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Kevin Turner, who had escaped from Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility nine days earlier, died in a shootout with Glatz.

Seniors headed to watch Phillies

St. Jerome Seniors will be traveling to Baltimore on May 16 to see the Phillies play the Orioles.

The cost is $110 and includes round-trip motorcoach transportation, lower-level seating and a sit-down dinner at Phillips Seafood in the Inner Harbor.

New steak shop

Pat’s Pizza & Steaks opened on Monday in Roosevelt Mall, in the former home of Jim’s Steaks. The emphasis will be on service and quality food, such as the company’s classic pizza recipe and new and improved Philly cheesesteak. The company has more than 60 locations in four states. ••
