Northeast Times wins seven Keystone Press Awards

The Times took home seven statewide journalism awards.

The Northeast Times won seven Keystone Press Awards in a contest conducted by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.

Sports editor Joe Mason won two first-place awards and an honorable mention. His winning stories were on the Archbishop Ryan boys basketball team reaching the state semifinals and the Northeast High School football team winning the Public League championship. The honorable mention award was for a series on the top 10 male athletes of the last 30 years at local high schools.

Managing editor Melissa Yerkov won first place in the page design category for designs of stories on Father Judge crew, World War II aircraft at Northeast Philadelphia Airport and the opening of the Museum of the American Revolution.

Yerkov won a second-place award for front page design that included designs of stories on a byproduct of city sewage polluting the air in Upper Holmesburg, a homeless woman claiming to be Jerry Lewis’ daughter who spends her time in the Northeast and the turnaround at George Washington High School.

Yerkov won an honorable mention award for front page design for designs of stories on a West Torresdale woman spreading awareness of brain tumors, Larry Krasner’s victory in the district attorney’s race and the 50th anniversary of Archbishop Ryan.

Reporter Logan Krum won an honorable mention award for a profile of Northwood resident Joe Menkevich, who researches Northeast history.

The Times competes in Division V, for weekly newspapers with circulations of more than 10,000. The Times has eight zones with a total circulation of 114,500.

The judging was done by journalists in Illinois.

Winners will be honored on June 2 at a banquet during the Pennsylvania Press Conference at the Wyndham hotel in Gettysburg. ••
