Women’s health fair at Nazareth

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will host a women’s health fair on Tuesday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The hospital will offer free health information, screenings, giveaways and prizes. Participants can meet with healthcare professionals and learn about available women’s health services.

People who register in advance will receive a complimentary meal voucher to the hospital cafeteria.

St. Hubert organizing trip to Atlantic City

St. Hubert High School is organizing a trip to Atlantic City on Monday, June 18.

The day will include a one-hour boat ride, four hours at Resorts Casino and a visit to Renault Winery.

The cost is $75 and includes $25 slot cash, all-you-can-eat dinner and unlimited wine. The fee must be paid in full by May 25. Proceeds benefit the faculty scholarship fund. A bus departs St. Hubert, 7320 Torresdale Ave., at 8:45 a.m. and arrives back at about 9 p.m. Call Mary at 267–231–7367. ••

MaST Charter presents Shakespeare

The Shakespeare Society at MaST Community Charter High School, 1800 Byberry Road, will present four performances of The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet.

Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 11–12, and Saturday, May 19, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 20.

Doors open 30 minutes before each performance.

John Birch Society meeting on Tuesday

The John Birch Society will meet on Tuesday, May 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, at Rhawn and Ditman streets.

John F. McManus, president emeritus of the group, will be featured in an hour-long DVD, Oppose a Con-Con, which explains the workings of a proposed constitutional convention,

The motto of the John Birch Society is “Less Government, More Responsibility and — With God’s Help — A Better World.” ••

Historical Society of Tacony to meet Monday

The Historical Society of Tacony will be holding its semi-annual general membership meeting on Monday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Tacony Library, 6742 Torresdale Ave. The meeting will feature updates on the historic house plaque program and the Tacony Civic Association summer kickoff event on June 23.

Board member Charles McCloskey will present a discussion about the old Bake House property, known today as Delaire Landing in Torresdale. Once part of a 670-acre tract surveyed before William Penn founded Philadelphia, this 55-acre parcel, unchanged in size since 1822, contained six riverfront homes (one of which still stands) and a commercial bakery that was reported to have baked bread for General Washington’s army. The meeting will also feature a display of photos and memorabilia related to Torresdale. There will be books and commemorative ornaments available for purchase. ••

Library opening at Deer Meadows

Deer Meadows Retirement Community will host the grand opening of the Bernard Stepanski Veteran’s Library during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, May 11, at 10:30 a.m. The library will be on the fifth floor at Deer Meadows, 8301 Roosevelt Blvd.

A brief reception will be held in the Walton Conference Center following the ceremony. Stepanski’s Veteran History Project video will be shown. Beverages and snacks will be served. Raffles will be held to benefit the library. Donations are welcome.

Stepanski was a World War II Army veteran and a resident of Deer Meadows. He and his family have donated many books on history and on all wars that are displayed in the library. ••

Spring fling Saturday at 8th Police District

A spring fling will take place on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., outside the 8th Police District, 3100 Red Lion Road. The day will feature music, food trucks, raffle baskets, more than 75 vendors and craft people and a 50–50.

A portion of proceeds will benefit the Philadelphia Blue Flame police and fire football team. ••

Fundraiser for parish house is on Saturday

Supporters of preserving the parish house at Trinity Church, Oxford will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, May 12, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Presentation BVM social hall, 100 Old Soldiers Road, Cheltenham.

Tickets cost $30 in advance or $35 at the door. The evening will include dinner, a pig roast, beer, wine, soda, coffee, dessert, music, a photo booth, 50/50 and raffle baskets. Call 609–705–8733 or visit [email protected] ••

World War II discussion at NE Regional

Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave., will host Submarine Warfare in World War II on Saturday, May 12, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Farmers market at KleinLife

A farmers market, featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, has opened at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave.

Downsize event at Fox Chase Library

Have coffee with 8th District cops

The 8th Police District welcomes the community to attend Coffee with a Cop on Wednesday, May 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. The 8th Police District is located at 3100 Red Lion Road. ••

Houseman hosting summer camp

Houseman Recreation Center, 5091 Summerdale Ave. (at Godfrey Avenue), will host a summer camp from June 18 to Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The camp is for kids ages 5–12.

There will be a mandatory meeting for parents on June 14 at 6 p.m.

There is a $25 registration fee. The eight-week camp costs $600. Before- and after-care is available for an additional $30 per week.

The camp will feature swimming, arts and crafts, reading literacy, sports, two trips weekly, dance, exercise, breakfast and lunch.

Train show on track for May 19

The nonprofit Train Collectors Association Atlantic Division will hold its Toy Train Show and Sale on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall (Penns Landing Caterers), 1301 S. Columbus Blvd.

The show will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is $5 per attendee, or per family of two adults and all children under 12 years old. Plenty of free parking is available.

There will be operating toy train layouts, along with a variety of vintage toy trains and repair parts for sale. The day will also include toy train activities for kids. Door prizes will be awarded to adults and children, and a raffle will be held. Food will be for sale.

Immigrant fair at NE Regional

Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave., will host an immigrant resources fair on Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is free and open to immigrants, refugees and asylees,

Participants will learn about English classes, citizenship classes, employment, housing, business assistance, health and more.

Information will be provided by the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, City of Philadelphia, Esperanza, JEVS, HIAS, SCORE, Women’s Opportunities Resource Center, Arab American Development Corporation, Penn Asian Senior Services, Small Business Administration and more.

North Catholic alums heading to AC

The Northeast Catholic Alumni Association will hold a trip on Monday, Aug. 6.

There will be a one-hour boat ride in Atlantic City and a five-hour stay at Resorts Casino, with $25 in slot cash and a $20 food voucher. A bus will depart the alumni office, at Rhawn and Fairfield streets, at 9 a.m. and arrive back at about 7 p.m.

The cost is $60 and must be paid in full by July 5.

Career expo to be held on May 16

City Councilman Bobby Henon will hold a career expo on Wednesday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fountain of Life Christian Church, 7811 Frankford Ave.

There will be nearly 30 employers, representing more than 1,000 open positions.

Shredding May 19 in Wissinoming

Riverfront North Partnership announces awardees to be honored

Riverfront North Partnership (formerly known as the Delaware River City Corporation) will hold a fundraiser on Thursday, May 17, at Glen Foerd on the Delaware, 5001 Grant Ave.

Attorney Frank A. Mayer III will be presented with The Robert A. Borski Award for Lifetime Achievement.

The keynote speaker will be Harold T. Epps, Philadelphia’s commissioner of the Department of Commerce.

Riverfront North Partnership will present four additional awards to supporters of its mission.

Anthony Naccarato, president of O’Donnell & Naccarato — Structural Engineers, will be awarded the Outstanding Service Award.

Philadelphia Insurance Companies will receive the Corporate Stewardship Award.

The Center for Employment Opportunities will be awarded the Community Organization of the Year Award.

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will host free community bariatric information sessions to help weight-loss surgery patients achieve healthy lifestyles.

Participants will be able to meet Nazareth’s bariatric surgeons and learn about life-changing surgery options and support services.

Frankford Fitness Series begins in June

The Frankford Fitness Series will offer yoga for beginners and zumba classes on six upcoming Saturdays.

The classes will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Frankford Pause Park, 4667 Paul St.

Yoga classes will take place on June 16, July 28 and Aug. 11. Zumba classes will take place on June 30, July 14 and Aug. 25. Participants are asked to bring their own mats. ••

No abortions for Down syndrome diagnosis

By a vote of 139–56, the state House of Representatives passed legislation to prohibit the abortion of a child due solely to a diagnosis of possible Down syndrome.

Under current law, a woman can obtain an abortion prior to 24 weeks gestational age for any reason, except if the woman’s sole reason is to select the sex of the child. House Bill 2050 will expand that exception to prohibit aborting a child due solely to a prenatal diagnosis that the unborn child has Down syndrome.

Reps. Tom Murt, Martina White, Mike Driscoll and John Taylor voted for the bill.

Reps. Kevin Boyle, Ed Neilson, Jason Dawkins, Jared Solomon and Isabella Fitzgerald voted against the bill.

House Bill 2050 moves on to the Senate for consideration. Gov. Tom Wolf opposes the bill. ••

Beef-and-beer fundraiser at Cannstatter’s

A beef-and-beer fundraiser will take place on Saturday, May 19, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road. Proceeds will benefit Erin Gallagher’s fight against brain cancer.
