Flags can be dropped off at the Oxley Post.
The American Legion is collecting damaged and distressed flags in advance of its annual flag retirement ceremony on Saturday, June 16, at 3 p.m. at the Charles P. McMenamy Post located at 8041 Frankford Ave.
Flags can be dropped off at the Oxley Post, located at Torresdale Avenue and Decatur Street (just south of Rhawn Street) or at the McMenamy Post after 3 p.m. on weekdays and after noon on Saturday.
“We will accept any American, state or POW flag,” said Bruce Conklin, commander of the William D. Oxley Post. “Flags that are torn, frayed, faded or soiled are considered unserviceable and should not be flown.”
The public is also invited to attend the flag retirement ceremony.
“It’s a beautiful and solemn ceremony and a great way to commemorate the sacrifices made by the men and women who have fought and died for our freedom,” said Joe Wysochanski, member of the McMenamy Post.
