Nature and history walks, free movies and more this week in Northeast Philadelphia.

Nature and history walk Sunday

Friends of Pennypack Park will hold its monthly nature and history walk on Sunday, Sept. 16, starting at 1 p.m. Walkers can meet at the bike path entrance to the park, at the intersection of Bustleton Avenue and Benton Street (the west side of the intersection).

The walk will follow the route of a planned but never completed railroad line, and participants will view many natural woodland and geological features.

The rain date is Sept. 23. Call 215–934-PARK. ••

Free outdoor movies to be shown

The city Department of Parks and Recreation will be sponsoring free outdoor movie nights. The movies will start about 15 minutes after sunset.

On Sept. 14, watch The Incredibles at Fox Chase Recreation Center, 7901 Ridgeway St. On Sept. 21, watch Avengers: Infinity War at Houseman Recreation Center, 5091 Summerdale Ave. On Sept. 28, watch The Emoji Movie at Palmer Playground, 3035 Comly Road. ••

Bark for Life benefits Cancer Society

The annual American Cancer Society Bark for Life will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Neshaminy State Park, Pavilion 3, 3401 State Road in Bensalem.

There will be vendors, along with food for people and activities, games and contests for dogs. The dog registration fee is $15. The cost for vendors is $25. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

Peace devotions at St. Tim’s

The 10th annual Fatima Holy Hours for World Peace, sponsored by the World Apostolate of Fatima, will take place on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at St. Timothy Church, 3001 Levick St.

Devotions will include rosary, benediction and procession of the Fatima statue. All are welcome. ••

Visits planned to cemeteries

KleinLife is organizing an excursion on Thursday, Sept. 13, to cemeteries in the western suburbs.

A bus will depart KleinLife, at 10100 Jamison Ave., at 10 a.m. There will be visits to Mt. Jacob Cemetery, 700 W. Oak Lane, Glenolden; Mt. Sharon Cemetery, 500 E. Springfield Road, Springfield; and Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 1200 Bartram Ave., Collingdale.

Running series for kids

The Healthy Kids Running Series will hold four upcoming events on the grounds of Washington Savings Bank, 2900 Comly Road.

Doo Wop Festival at FOP

The Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.

Admission is $25 and includes food, draft beer and soda. Parking is free, and a shuttle bus will be available.

All proceeds benefit the FOP survivors fund.

Ten of the area’s top vocal groups will perform, and some of Philadelphia’s best oldies radio disc jockeys will be in attendance. The event is rain or shine.

Philadelphia Protestant Home gala

The Philadelphia Protestant Home’s 13th annual gala for benevolent care will take place on Friday, Sept. 28, from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Ballroom, 2014 Hornig Road.

The evening will include a welcome reception, silent auction, speaker program, dinner, dancing, a photo booth, door prizes, raffles, 50/50 and live music by Legacy. The theme is Lovin’ Philly.

Archbishop Ryan adds to staff

Archbishop Ryan High School welcomes two new staff members.

Linda Rehfuss, Class of 1990, has been hired as administrative assistant. She has worked in retail sales and management, and is an active board member of the Friends of Archbishop Ryan High School. She will provide assistance to the school president, and the admission and development offices.

Mary Anne Benner, Class of 1974, has been hired as director of institutional advancement. Benner has worked in the banking industry, most recently as business development manager at American Heritage Federal Credit Union. She serves as co-director of Ryan’s In Vite Mane Alumni Group.

Ryan President Michael Barnett said, “The addition of Linda and Mary Anne — both proud Ryan alumni — will enable us to take another huge step forward in making our vision for the school and our community a reality.” ••

John J. Nesbitt reunion on Oct. 10

The 47th reunion of former employees of John J. Nesbitt will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. at Tiffany Diner, 9010 Roosevelt Blvd.

Nesbitt was a large commercial heating and air conditioning company at State Road and Rhawn Street.

Jay Ajayi coming to ShopRite

Proctor and Gamble Foods has arranged for running back Jay Ajayi to visit the ShopRite near Harbison Avenue and Bridge Street on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Ajayi, who scored two touchdowns in the opening game, will not be signing autographs. Rather, he will be there to promote the P&G ProActive Campaign and to bag groceries in honor of the 10th annual ShopRite Partners in Caring Help Bag Hunger Day. ••

Resource expo at Tarken

Tarken Recreation Center, 6250 Frontenac St., will host a resource expo on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature vendors, local business owners, service providers and free flu shots from Rite Aid. ••

Eagles, Villanova
to be honored

The Eagles and the Villanova men’s basketball team will receive Pride of Philadelphia Awards at the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Nov. 1 at the SugarHouse Event Center.

The Eagles will be honored for winning Super Bowl LII. Villanova will be recognized for winning its second NCAA championship in three years.

Pat Williams will emcee the ceremony, which will induct 15 individuals and a team.

The inductees are Allen Iverson, Benny Bass, Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Claire Smith, Danny Murtaugh, David Berkoff, Donald Lippincott, Gavvy Cravath, Jamie Moyer, Joanne Iverson, Louis Santop, Mel Greenberg, Muffet McGraw, Reggie Leach and the 1948–49 Eagles.

The gala is open to the public. Tickets cost $50 for the ceremony and $175 for the ceremony and VIP reception.

The Hall of Fame opened a gallery at Spike’s, a trophy and awards shop at 2701 Grant Ave. The gallery is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon or by appointment.

Day trips scheduled

The Travel with KleinLife series consists of five one-day excursions.

The series will get underway on Oct. 28 with a trip to the Zellerbach Theatre at the University Pennsylvania to enjoy Soul Songs: Inspiring Women of Klezmer.

Then it’s off to New York on Sunday, Nov. 4, to see the musical Mean Girls, playing at the August Wilson Theatre.

The excursions continue on Nov. 28, with a trip to Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. The trip features a live show with vocalist Michael McGeehan.

Staying closer to home, Travel With KleinLife will visit the Smoke & Mirrors Magic Theatre, in Huntingdon Valley, on Thursday, Dec. 11 to enjoy a private magic and comedy performance.

The final trip in the series is an excursion to Broadway on Sunday, March 10, to enjoy The Cher Show.

Overdose Awareness Walk on Sept. 30

State Rep. Thomas Murt (R-152nd dist.) will sponsor an Overdose Awareness Walk and Hope Expo on Sunday, Sept. 30.

Registration is at 1 p.m. The expo will run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 33 Conwell Drive., in Maple Glen.

The Hope Expo is being organized with Angels in Motion. It will feature representatives from state agencies, local addiction support organizations, drug addiction rehab clinics and recovery houses. It will also include information on insurance, treatments and harm reduction.

Hero Thrill Show on Sept. 22

The 64th annual Philadelphia Hero Thrill Show will take place on Saturday, Sept. 22, at noon in the parking lot of the Wells Fargo Center.

Music mogul Kenny Gamble will be the grand marshal.

The show will feature police highway patrol motorcycle acts and appearances by the aviation, bomb squad, crime scene investigation, SWAT, firearms and marine units.

Proceeds benefit the educations of the families of deceased local firefighters and police officers lost in the line of duty. ••

Race will aid scholarship fund

The Crusader Classic 5K Run will take place on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 9 a.m.

Proceeds will benefit the Lt. Robert Neary Scholarship Fund in memory of the firefighter who died in April 2012 while battling a five-alarm inferno at an abandoned East Kensington warehouse.

The entry fee is $25 if postmarked by Sept. 21, or $30 thereafter. The cost is $15 for youths 18 and under.

For each adult registration, $5 will be sent to Homes for Troops.

Registrations will take place in the Father Judge school yard, 3301 Solly Ave., beginning at 7:30 a.m. Event T-shirts will be provided to all who pre-register (and to race-day registrants while supplies last).

The race will start at the bandshell in Pennypack Park, near Welsh Road and Rowland Avenue, at 9 a.m. It will finish with a lap around the Judge track. Medals will be presented to the three male and female finishers in age groups.

State gives Holy Family $1.5 million

Holy Family University was awarded a $1.5 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant.

Two floors of Holy Family Hall will be revamped to bring undergraduate admissions and student services together. Also, the campus dining facility will receive an upgrade.

“As the only university in NE Philadelphia, it is critical to support the renovation and expansion of Holy Family University, not only to create jobs, but also to allow Holy Family the ability to compete in attracting students in a highly competitive market,” said state Sen. John Sabatina Jr., who worked with Rep. Mike Driscoll to help secure the funding. ••

Renew/apply for passport

The Philadelphia Passport Agency welcomes people to apply for or renew a passport on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The office is in the U.S. Custom Building, 200 Chestnut St.

No appointment is needed. Applications can be completed at travel.state.gov, and an unsigned, printed copy, along with a photo, can be brought to the office.

Clothing drive to benefit cancer care

The Marlyn Fein Chapter, Fox Chase Cancer Center is running a clothing drive on Sept. 22 at 604 Township Line Road, Cheltenham, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The public is encouraged to bring gently used clothing, accessories, books and small trinkets in bags or boxed for pickup.

The event supports cancer research and compassionate patient care. ••

Block party at veterans home

The Delaware Valley Veterans Nursing Home, 2701 Southampton Road (at Roosevelt Boulevard), will be having its yearly block party and car show on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Texas Roadhouse will offer meal platters for $5. A Taste of Artistry will present canvas painting for children and adults at a cost of $10 for a pre-drawn canvas, with to-go sets also available.

The day will include carnival games and prizes, bounce houses, a clown doing balloon art, face painting, a craft fair and flea market, basket raffles, a petting zoo and disc jockey.

KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., begins its fall Lifelong Learning series on Oct. 8. The public is invited to participate along with KleinLife members.

Programs will take Mondays through Thursdays.
